Country: USA Deadline: May 1, 2021 Category: High School Students

The WSPTA Game Development Competition was launched in 2016 as a STEM-based initiative to inspire and support student progress. Students in grades 9-12 (or 7 and 8 as part of a bigger group of 9th graders or older) who attend a school with a functioning PTA are invited to join and contribute their knowledge and creativity on a given subject.

The goal is for students to use their creative abilities and express themselves by designing a game, either a real board game or a computer game, either alone or in groups of up to six people. Best board game, best computer game, graphics and animation, game design, programming (code), and audio design are among the categories in which students' contributions are assessed.

A new category, best board game, has been created to guarantee that all students have an equal opportunity to compete (independent of access to computers and programming classes). Students can now enter by developing a board game (including card games), requiring no prior programming expertise. All students will get the opportunity to demonstrate their creativity, perseverance, and game creation abilities.

To be eligible for the WSPTA Game Development Competition, students must:

  1. Must participate through a local PTA/PTSA in good standing. Parent groups not affiliated with Washington State PTA are not eligible to sponsor this program. It is the responsibility of the local PTA/PTSA to determine each student’s eligibility in the program. A student may develop an entry in or outside of school.
  2. Will be judged based on the interpretation of the theme. In the 2020-21 school year, the theme is “Hope” with the inspirational quote, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” Martin Luther King, Jr. – A Testament of Hope.

SELECTION AND NOTIFICATION OF THE FINALISTS: At the state level, entries are scrutinized. Theme, uniqueness, and creativity will be the primary criteria for judging entries. Finalists will be advised of their status through email. A grant has been granted to cover the costs of the prizes.

LICENSE AND OWNERSHIP: The entrant retains ownership of any submission, but participation in this competition grants PTA irrevocable permission and authorization to display, copy, reproduce, improve, print, sublicense, publish, distribute, and create derivative works for PTA purposes. Acceptance of all terms and conditions is implied by submitting an application into the program.

PLATFORM: The game must be playable on a PC, Mac, or web browser. If the game is available on various platforms, the team should specify which one they prefer.

GAME ENGINE: Participants are free to use whatever game engine that best suits their needs/skills as long as it can be played on one of the specified platforms. All terms and conditions of the chosen game engine must be read and understood by the participant, who must also adhere to any limits imposed by the program's licensing agreement. Ascertain that you can deliver a functional demo that does not necessitate the installation of development tools.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: The game should operate on a standard PC, not a “high-end” PC or one that requires specialist hardware, or on an Android/iOS mobile platform.

PERFORMANCE AND STABILITY: The game should be able to run at least 20 frames per second. Crashing, pausing, or slowdowns in games should be kept to a minimum since they make assessing the content more difficult.

Plagiarism of any kind will result in instant disqualification, as well as a complaint to your school. Except for items designated as public domain with proof provided with your project proposal, all content and assets must be created from scratch.
