Our civil engineering courses are based on learning projects and focus on the central themes of sustainable development. You will learn all the skills necessary to pursue a career in the rapidly growing green economy. Our teachers focus on the following research topics and provide supervision:

• Sustainable water

In our MASc program, we emphasize research-intensive interdisciplinary work with a focus on sustainable development. You will conduct advanced research and conduct independent research. You will be engaged in creative design work in civil engineering under the supervision of teachers. Your degree will end with a written thesis, and you will be defended in an oral exam. Excellent college students can quickly enter our PhD program.

The eligibility for Master of Applied Science in Civil Engineering (MASc) in Canada for both domestic and international student is:

The admissions selection process is competitive. Not all students who meet the minimum requirements will be admitted. It is expected that around 15 students will be admitted to the program each year. On-line applications are submitted by following the links from the Graduate admissions website. The Graduate Admissions and Records Office is the official depository for all applicant documentation. Applicants will normally hold an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering. The minimum requirement for admission to the MASc is B+ (grade point average of 6.0 respectively on the University of Victoria scale of 9.0) for the last two years of university work.

Applications are accepted year-round for entry points in January, May and, September.

Students are encouraged to adhere to our recommended dates:

• September entry point: deadline of June 1
• January entry point: deadline of October 1

• Up to $17,500 per year (masters)
• Up to $20,000 per year (Ph.D.)

UVic Graduate Awards

• Up to $10,000 per year (masters and PhD)

Eligibility

• The minimum requirement for funding consideration is an A- average on the last two years of coursework
• Domestic and international students are considered equally for funding
• Full-time registration (3.0 units) for UVic Fellowship holders and at least part-time registration (1.5 units) for UVic Graduate Award holders
• Full-time registration for students registered with the Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL) is 1.5 units

Every year we employ many graduate students to assist with teaching, research, and lab instruction.

• Their academic units hire teaching assistants (TAs) to assist with teaching and grading courses. These are unionized, hourly positions.
• Faculty members hire research assistants (RAs) to help with their research. These roles are sometimes called scientific assistants or laboratory instructors. RA salaries come from faculty members’ research grants. Because of this, RA hours, salary, and other details are worked out between you and the faculty member.

Work-study

The work-study program offers part-time jobs on campus that fit your course schedule.

To be eligible, you must:

• Be a full-time student
• Demonstrate financial need
• Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN)

Co-operative Education Program (co-op)

UVic is home to the largest graduate co-op program in Canada. You can add a co-op to your master’s or doctoral studies for work experience in your field of study.
