The Bachelor of Digital Media Studies balances theory, critical thinking, and communication skills with the technical and creative skills required by today’s emerging digital technologies. The skills cultivated in the program are in demand in the entertainment arts, film and broadcasting industries, business management services, advertising, and public relations, publishing, network development, media production, news, publicity, communication, library science, document research, and other fields. A recent survey conducted in the UK showed that media studies graduates have the "highest employment rate" of all disciplines. This is a trend we expect to see in the Canadian market.
The course emphasizes media agency in all aspects of learning, requiring students to acquire the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to interact with contemporary media in a wide range of contexts, from promotion to management and production. The plan explores the multidisciplinary nature of digital media research as a research field.
The course content integrates the best knowledge from different research fields such as culture, perception, digital society, political economy, game theory, marketing, public relations, politics and regulation, and digital media creation (network, video, audio). Although the course pays special attention to contemporary Canadian media and culture, we encourage international students to bring their experiences into the classroom and share them through dialogue and assignments based on their knowledge of other cultures.
Students will discover how the knowledge and skills of digital media research can complement and strengthen their courses in other disciplines. This creative multidisciplinary approach to learning helps to increase the professional flexibility required in today's job market and is sought after by graduate schools.
The assignment aims to balance theoretical and professional product knowledge. In all courses, students will develop strong critical thinking, communication, and research skills. Collaboration is a hallmark of the media field, and the program requires students to collaborate on many courses. Students must demonstrate effective oral and written skills.
Encourage students to purchase laptops with industry-standard software such as production machines. Students can use laptop labs, wireless networking, video and audio production equipment, and technical support in the program. The VIU Campus Store agreement provides support for students to purchase computers and software.
The program also aims to accommodate students who transfer to VIU after two years of study elsewhere and those who have two-year diplomas in media studies, communication, and media production, usually starting with the third degree. (Note that some lower-level courses may be required - check with the department head for personal information on the transfer.)
Students are eligible for admission to University Academic programs if they meet one of the following conditions:
