Program Overview for Bachelor of Science Recreation (Therapeutic) in Canada:

Learn how recreation and leisure experiences can be used to improve the quality of life of people with disabilities, illnesses and other limitations. One of a few four-year degrees of its kind, Dalhousie's Recreation program was the first to be accredited in Canada by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. You'll be prepared to write the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) exam to become a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS).

Careers and future study:

Dalhousie students have higher than the national average pass rates for the NCTRC exam. Within the testing period of 2017 to 2019, of the 64 Dalhousie students that wrote the exam, 98.4% passed (The national average is 81.6%). Graduates from Dalhousie's Recreation program are in demand now, as public and private organizations plan for an aging and increasingly diverse population.

Therapeutic recreation is a rapidly growing field, and new career opportunities are constantly being created. You'll be well prepared to start a rewarding career as a member of an interdisciplinary team within the healthcare and recreation sectors. You might consider careers in the following areas:

• rehabilitation
• pediatrics
• palliative care

Future studies could include programs at the graduate level in science, health, or business administration.

Minimum admission requirements:

1. Completion of secondary school (Grade 12)
2. A minimum overall average of 70% in five academic Grade 12 courses
3. A final grade of at least 70% in Grade 12 academic English and any other required subject (see list below)

Please note: Admission to many programs at Dalhousie is competitive; meeting the minimum average doesn’t guarantee admission. Typically, 70% or higher is necessary in all required subjects for early admission.

If you don’t currently meet these requirements, you may be eligible for one of our upgrading or pathway programs.

2. Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE)
3. French Baccalauréat

5. Home-schooled applicants
