The school has produced twenty-one Spinoza Prize Laureates and sixteen Nobel Laureates, including Enrico Fermi and Albert Einstein. It is closely associated with the Dutch Royal Family, with Queen Juliana, Queen Beatrix, and King Willem-Alexander being former alumni.

At Leiden Bio Science Park (LBSP) Leiden University works together with the business community, the LUMC, and the Municipality of Leiden. This thriving business park comprises more than 200 companies and institutions, more than 100 of which are life sciences companies. This makes the LBSP the largest life sciences cluster in the Netherlands.
