Program Overview for Master of Family Studies and Gerontology in Canada:
Our family studies and gerontology graduate programs will help you gain insight into the key issues affecting the field: family dynamics and development or the aging of individuals and populations. You can focus your studies on family studies or gerontology.
Family research considers the lives of individuals and families, as well as plans and policies that affect families. Gerontology focuses on the issues related to aging and the challenges faced by the elderly.
We welcome international applicants to join our graduate program, and we encourage international applicants to apply as soon as possible so that there is enough time to obtain a student visa. Course Options: Thesis and Non-Thesis
You can choose between our thesis-based Master of Family Studies and Gerontology (MA FSGN) course and our Applied (course-based) Master of Family Studies and Gerontology (MFSGN) course.
Research and Professional Skills:
This course will prepare you for further academic inquiry or develop your career by combining your research and critical thinking skills with theory and practice in the field. As a graduate student, you can participate in research projects through the Nova Scotia Center on Aging (NSCA) and you can use the state-of-the-art facilities of the Maritime Aging Research and Policy Analysis Data Center.

Students will normally have completed an undergraduate degree in family studies, gerontology, sociology, psychology, or related health profession (e.g., social work, nursing, health education, pharmacy) with a minimum of a B average (3.0 GPA) in the last 10.0 units of study.
An undergraduate research methods course and an undergraduate statistics course will also be required, as background preparation for graduate courses in research methods (GFSG 6606-required) and statistics (GEPY 6608-an elective).
As part of their application, students will also complete a “Statement of Intent” letter, which is part of the Supplementary Information package for graduate admission. In this statement, they will briefly outline their knowledge of and purpose in applying to our program, identify their future career goals and comment on how completion of the program will help them achieve these goals.
They will also comment on how their past work, volunteer, academic experiences may be helpful in their intended program of study. There is a Senate-approved process for recognizing prior learning to meet the admissions criteria.

Both domestic and international students in thesis-based and course-based programs are eligible to receive some of our many internal scholarships.To be eligible to receive most internal scholarships, graduate students must be enrolled full-time, though some are offered to both full-time and part-time students.
