What is the impact of climate change on the economy? How to improve our healthcare system? Now that marijuana is legalized, how do we regulate it? Which financial instruments are the key to spreading modern economic risks? How to stimulate the economic development of the Aboriginal, Metis and Inuit communities?
These are some of the important questions studied by the Master of Applied Economics (MAE) at the University of Winnipeg. As an MAE student, you will master economic analysis and apply this knowledge to contemporary economic policy issues in Canada and abroad. Students will learn how economics provides information for policy in various fields, including regulation, health care, environmental policy, poverty, labor issues, and finance.
The demand for professional economists with strong analytical skills and practical knowledge in the field of policy analysis has been increasing. The MAE program addresses this demand from employers, whether in the public, private or non-governmental sectors. MAE courses are usually completed within one calendar year. Students can choose to study for a general degree or complete policy analysis or environmental, resource and development economics majors.
Like any master's program in economics, MAE students will study modern micro and macro economics and acquire strong quantitative skills. However, unlike standard courses, MAE graduates will gain in-depth knowledge in the subfields of environmental and development economics or contemporary economic policy. The program will train high-quality students to master the use of modern analytical tools and apply them to issues such as supervision, healthcare, environmental policy, natural resource extraction, housing, poverty, labor issues, and finance.
MAE graduates will be fully prepared for corporate or government work. They will be in a unique position to serve as researchers and practitioners in the growing non-profit and non-governmental sectors in Canada and around the world.
Students must hold, or reasonably expect to hold by September, an undergraduate degree in Economics with a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0 out of a possible 4.0. Students typically enter the MAE program having already taken Advanced Microeconomics, Advanced Macroeconomics, Econometrics, Calculus and Statistics as part of their undergraduate degree.
Applicants without sufficient background in economics may be admitted to a Qualifying Year. The Economics Department will assess degrees earned outside Canada to determine their equivalency.
