Detailed Information of Bachelor of Arts in Indigenous Studies in Canada at University of Fraser Valley

Program Overview for Bachelor of Arts in Indigenous Studies in Canada:

As part of the UFV Bachelor of Arts, you can choose to complete a major or minor Aboriginal major. In order to provide a wide range of learning, courses are organized around four themes: indigenous history, social relations, and governance, land, and culture, and worldview and spirit.

The plan focuses on the forms of indigenous knowledge, indigenous issues, contemporary challenges, and the process of decolonization, with the aim of improving the relationship between indigenous and settler societies and establishing new approaches and relationships. All students have the opportunity to enrich their learning by participating in field trips, recurring learning, interacting with elders, Stó: lō culture teaching, and special guest lectures.

Career expectations:
Aboriginal people are the fastest-growing population in Canada. According to Statistics Canada, they currently represent 4.3% of the Canadian population. It is estimated that by 2030, this figure will increase to 5.3%. Parallel to this trend, people are increasingly aware that the dominant postcolonial culture has marginalized indigenous peoples and deprived them of their right to participate and speak.

Much work must be done to repair the relationship between indigenous peoples and settler communities. Therefore, indigenous communities and institutions, and government ministries that serve indigenous peoples need well-trained leaders and advocates to work in the areas of treaty negotiation, policy formulation, and resource management. Public service departments, schools, prisons, and municipalities that work with indigenous people also provide job opportunities.

Sample employers:

  • Indigenous organizations
  • Indigenous communities
  • Indigenous community liaison offices
  • Community services
  • Government agencies
  • School districts
  • Non-profit organizations
  • Research centers and heritage sites
