Program Overview for Bachelor of Arts in English in Canada:

Develop your thinking, reading, and writing skills. These skills are sought after by employers and apply to a wide range of fields from marketing and business administration to education, journalism, and research, and earn a Bachelor of English Literature from UFV. The UFV English course enables you to clarify complex ideas and research results and the skills to analyze various texts and interpret iconic written works in history. 

The English major has four directions: literature, creative writing, drama, writing, and rhetoric:

• The literature course provides a foundation for the main author, genre, and period, as well as a broad understanding of the socio-cultural processes that shape indigenous, national, and transnational literature.

• The Creative Writing course combines literary learning with writing seminars, where you can discuss your work with colleagues and teachers. Learn the various creative processes and techniques of poetry, screenwriting, and novels. 

• Theater courses enhance your understanding of the role of language in the theater. You will explore a variety of dramatic genres, consider how dramatic texts record and archive past performing practices, and put the importance of drama in historical and social movements into context. 

• The Writing and Rhetoric course teaches you how to use writing and language as tools by examining the meaning and use of English. Understand how language serves as a call to action and how it works for yourself, users, and communities. 

In your first and second year, you study and comment on various culture and era literary works that interest you. You can choose to delve into challenging creative writing techniques, explore the evolution of drama in the story, or analyze the structure and usage of English.

In your third and fourth years, you will improve your critical analysis, writing, and research skills. When they participate in class discussions and analyze others' writing, they build richer relationships with teachers and peers.

At the end of the course, you will know and understand in depth the main genres, periods, movements, and authors in the history of literature. You have acquired transferable skills, such as critical inquiry, evaluation of evidence, and the ability to explore different perspectives and develop arguments, which enable you and trust you to establish yourself in various fields.

Career Expectations:

According to Workopolis, writing and communication skills are the two most sought-after skills in Canadian jobs. This is not surprising: employers can teach tough skills, but they need creative and expressive people who can tell the stories that drive company success. 

In fact, people who are good at using words are trendy: Job data company Payscale highlighted 14 types of jobs that earn more than $ 60,000 - up to six-figure salaries - these jobs are more likely to hire students from English. Some of these jobs belong to traditional industries, such as publishing, writing, and public relations. But the tech world wants creative talents too. Technology companies are looking for content strategists, web producers, and technical writers, which are ideal jobs for English learners. 

Ultimately, critical thinking and communication skills are closely related to all professional fields. The UFV English program graduates have achieved success in education, publishing, broadcasting, law, politics, public service, business, and the arts in Canada and abroad.

High School Applicants, please provide a copy of:

• Your high school transcript(s) and proof of graduation if you have graduated from high school, or a copy of your interim high school transcript(s) if you are currently in high school.
• If you are currently studying in a high school outside of Canada, you will be required to provide your final high school transcript and proof of graduation in August, or at the latest, before fall classes begin.
• If you are currently studying in a BC high school or BC high school offshore, please provide your Personal Education Number (PEN) in your application. UFV can download your interim and final transcripts if you have provided permission to release your grades to UFV for one year at the Ministry of Education website.  The deadline to receive your final high transcript and proof of graduation is August 3.

Post-Secondary Applicants, please provide a copy of:

• Your high school transcript(s).
• Your post-secondary transcript(s) from all institutions attended. Please note that evaluation of previous post-secondary credit is a requirement for admission to some programs. If your official post-secondary transcript(s) is required, a document evaluation fee will be charged to your student account.

Option 1: Secondary school (for students with secondary school graduation only)

1. B.C. secondary school graduation or equivalent. (Students who have completed a secondary school equivalency program will also be considered but must complete the specific entrance requirements below.)

2. Prerequisites for MATH 141.

3. Prerequisites for ENGL 105.

4. Prerequisites for PHYS 101.

Option 2: University entrance (for applicants who have completed at least nine post-secondary credits at a recognized institution)

1. At least nine transferable credits at a recognized post-secondary institution with a minimum CGPA of 2.67 based on all university-level credits attempted.

2. Prerequisites for MATH 141.

3. Prerequisites for ENGL 105.

4. Prerequisites for PHYS 101.

• Official transcripts (or interim transcripts) from all post-secondary institutions attended showing grade/course achievement as per entrance requirements.
