In physics and astronomy, you will study the components of our universe. Through dynamic learning, you will gain basic knowledge about yourself and your research.
All master of science and doctorate degrees are awarded in physics. Astronomy, Medical Physics, and Marine Physics also offer specific degree courses with different course requirements.
In our research-focused doctoral program, you will study one of the following four directions:
You will work in a community that covers multiple fields of research. You will write an article that will reshape our understanding of the universe. You will also complete supplemental courses and candidate qualification exams.
Areas of focus:
Admission to Ph.D. programs
The normal prerequisite for all programs is a (UVic equivalent) MSc degree in Physics, Astronomy, or related subjects. Students already registered in the UVic MSc program may have the opportunity to enter the Ph.D. program directly via the MSc-to-PhD transfer process. See the Physics and Astronomy website for further details and requirements.
International applicants
Applicants for Ph.D. programs whose native language is not English must satisfy the English Competency Requirement for the Faculty of Graduate Studies (see Faculty Admissions for details). Students with this qualification may still be required to complete English language courses along with their program-related coursework.
The English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirements for Phd in Physics & Astronomy in Canada: are:
