Program Overview for MA in Musicology in Canada:

The Victoria University School of Music offers a unique two-year experience to help you prepare for various music majors, from music performance and technology to arts management and research fellowships. We provide excellent training, custom projects, performance opportunities, and research experience to help you complete your studies. 

We provide you with the tools you need to build a music business. Our alumni include professional performers, composers, academics, art managers, and technology innovators. Music is a diverse field, and UVic has the resources to help you shape your own path.

Our degree in Musicology emphasizes the role of academic research in music research and promotion. This includes cross-disciplinary research involving music and publishing, literature, technology, fine arts, philosophy, and critical theory. You can customize project-based dissertations or degrees to match your career goals in academics, library, marketing, or management.

The eligibility for MA in Musicology in Canada for both domestic and international student is:

The School of Music gives priority in admissions considerations to students intending to register on a full-time basis.

Applicants to the master’s programs must hold a BMus or BA in music from a recognized university, with at least a B+ or 6.0 average in work performed in the last two years (or the last 30 units) of undergraduate study.

All applicants should submit a one to a two-page statement outlining their background, goals as a musician and/or scholar, and their reasons for pursuing their graduate degree at the University of Victoria.

In addition to the standard admission forms, applicants to the Musicology programs should submit two examples of their work in the field of music history and a personal statement of research interests and professional goals that must demonstrate the suitability of our program to those goals.

Deadlines

All applications must be submitted on forms available from the Graduate admissions website by December 15. Applicants are automatically considered for a Graduate Fellowship or Award upon application.

Eligibility

  • The minimum requirement for funding consideration is an A- average on the last two years of coursework
  • Domestic and international students are considered equally for funding
  • Full-time registration (3.0 units) for UVic Fellowship holders and at least part-time registration (1.5 units) for UVic Graduate Award holders
  • Full-time registration for students registered with the Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL) is 1.5 units

Every year we employ many graduate students to assist with teaching, research, and lab instruction.

  • Their academic units hire teaching assistants (TAs) to assist with teaching and grading courses. These are unionized, hourly positions.
  • Faculty members hire research assistants (RAs) to help with their research. These roles are sometimes called scientific assistants or laboratory instructors. RA salaries come from faculty members’ research grants. Because of this, RA hours, salary, and other details are worked out between you and the faculty member.

Work-study

The work-study program offers part-time jobs on campus that fit your course schedule.

To be eligible, you must:

  • Be a full-time student
  • Demonstrate financial need

Co-operative Education Program (co-op)
