Program Overview for Art - MFA in Canada:

The Master of Fine Arts engages students in a deep exploration of visual art as practice-based creative research, drawing together the technical and interpretive skills required of a professional arts practice. Students work with a range of media or focus on a specific medium, and are given studio space and full access to the resources of the department. The Master of Fine Arts is widely recognized as the pathway to becoming an artist-teacher at institutions of higher learning in North America. The program consists of:

  • Core Courses: In each term students complete a studio course and graduate seminar.
  • Exhibition: Students will show their work in an exhibition as a program requirement.
  • Art History and Critical Study: Students will take courses in research methods, art theory and criticism, critical study and research, and a conference course in Art History.
  • Supporting Paper and Oral Exam: Students will prepare a paper and undergo a final thesis oral exam.

A minimum of 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 point system, over the past two years of full-time study (a minimum of 10 full-course equivalents or 60 units) of the undergraduate degree.. A four year baccalaureate degree, or equivalent from a recognized institution..
