In this master's program, you will be exposed to higher-level thinking and research in the field of statistics. You will benefit from the department’s contacts with organizations such as the Vancouver Island Health Department. You can complete the degree through a thesis or a non-thesis project. The eligibility for Msc in Statistics in Canada for both domestic and international student is:

Students are normally admitted in September or January. Summer session courses are not generally offered.

Foreign applicants are strongly encouraged to submit the Graduate Record Examination General Test (GRE) scores and its Subject Test in Mathematics.

Admission to the Master's program

Students admitted to a master’s program (MSc or MA) will normally have a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics or Statistics. A student without the necessary background may be considered for a pre-entry program as outlined in the Upgrading for Admission to Graduate Studies section or 1. Enhanced Program.

For a master’s program, students whose first language is not English must achieve a score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) of at least 575 on the paper-based test or an overall score of 90 on the Internet-Based test, with the following minimum section requirements: Listening 20; Speaking 20; Reading 20; Writing 20.

Admission to the Ph.D. program

Admission into the Ph.D. program will normally require a master’s degree in Mathematics or Statistics and excellent research potential, documented by the quality of the master’s thesis or letters of recommendation. In exceptional cases, students showing outstanding promise may be permitted to enroll directly in the Ph.D. program with only a Bachelor’s degree.

All Ph.D. students are admitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies as provisional candidates until they have passed their candidacy examinations. At this time, they are automatically classified as candidates for Doctor of Philosophy.

For a Ph.D. program, students whose first language is not English must achieve a score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) of at least 575 on the paper-based test, 233 on the computer-based test, or an overall score of 90 on the Internet-Based test, with the following minimum section requirements: Listening 20; Speaking 20; Reading 20; Writing 20.

Eligibility

• The minimum requirement for funding consideration is an A- average on the last two years of coursework
• Domestic and international students are considered equally for funding
• Full-time registration (3.0 units) for UVic Fellowship holders and at least part-time registration (1.5 units) for UVic Graduate Award holders
• Full-time registration for students registered with the Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL) is 1.5 units

Every year we employ many graduate students to assist with teaching, research, and lab instruction.

• Their academic units hire teaching assistants (TAs) to assist with teaching and grading courses. These are unionized, hourly positions.
• Faculty members hire research assistants (RAs) to help with their research. These roles are sometimes called scientific assistants or laboratory instructors. RA salaries come from faculty members’ research grants. Because of this, RA hours, salary, and other details are worked out between you and the faculty member.

Work-study

The work-study program offers part-time jobs on campus that fit your course schedule.
