Program Overview for Msc in Mathematics in Canada:

Advanced mathematics and statistics are used in various fields of science and the social sciences. In our graduate program, you will learn the key skills necessary for your future career. You will learn to analyze data and find relationships and patterns. You will become a member of a department with world-class research influence.

Our research fields include applied mathematics, discrete mathematics, pure mathematics, and statistics. You will conduct research under our faculty, including two Canadian Research Council Chairs and other award-winning researchers.

Conduct mathematical investigations in a wide range of applied mathematics, discrete mathematics, or pure mathematics. Your education will be supplemented by regular courses and seminars. The sum of your research will be an article that will promote the development of the field of mathematics. You will defend this final work in an oral exam, which will prove your mastery of mathematics.

The eligibility for Msc in Mathematics in Canada for both domestic and international student is:

Students are normally admitted in September or January. Summer session courses are not generally offered.

Foreign applicants are strongly encouraged to submit the Graduate Record Examination General Test (GRE) scores and its Subject Test in Mathematics.

Admission to the Master's program

Students admitted to a master’s program (MSc or MA) will normally have a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics or Statistics. A student without the necessary background may be considered for a pre-entry program as outlined in the Upgrading for Admission to Graduate Studies section or 1. Enhanced Program.

For a master’s program, students whose first language is not English must achieve a score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) of at least 575 on the paper-based test or an overall score of 90 on the Internet-Based test, with the following minimum section requirements: Listening 20; Speaking 20; Reading 20; Writing 20.

Admission to the Ph.D. program

Admission into the Ph.D. program will normally require a master’s degree in Mathematics or Statistics and excellent research potential, documented by the quality of the master’s thesis or letters of recommendation. In exceptional cases, students showing outstanding promise may be permitted to enroll directly in the Ph.D. program with only a Bachelor’s degree.

All Ph.D. students are admitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies as provisional candidates until they have passed their candidacy examinations. At this time, they are automatically classified as candidates for Doctor of Philosophy.

For a Ph.D. program, students whose first language is not English must achieve a score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) of at least 575 on the paper-based test, 233 on the computer-based test, or an overall score of 90 on the Internet-Based Test, with the following minimum section requirements: Listening 20; Speaking 20; Reading 20; Writing 20.

N.B: Most universities have specific international admission requirements based on different education systems.

These are the test eligibilities for the Msc in Mathematics to qualify.

The English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirements for Msc in Mathematics in Canada: are:

  • TOEFL(ibt): 90
  • IELTS(academic): 6.5
N.B: ELP is not mandatory for all international students. You could apply without ELP if your previous degree's medium of instruction were in English. Students of Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia, for example, are not required to take the ELP test.

Other test requirements:

  • GRE(computer): Yes
N.B: Some programs require both international and domestic students to seat for SAT/ACT (for undergraduate) or GRE/GMAT (for graduate and Ph.D. programs). While others require these aptitude tests only for international students. So, verify it with the respective university before applying.

Graduate students registered in full-time programs are automatically considered for a fellowship. This is based on a qualifying GPA.

Individual award amounts may vary depending on the program.

UVic Fellowship Awards

  • Up to $17,500 per year (masters)
  • Up to $20,000 per year (Ph.D.)

UVic Graduate Awards

  • Up to $10,000 per year (masters and PhD)

Eligibility

  • The minimum requirement for funding consideration is an A- average on the last two years of coursework
  • Domestic and international students are considered equally for funding
  • Full-time registration (3.0 units) for UVic Fellowship holders and at least part-time registration (1.5 units) for UVic Graduate Award holders
  • Full-time registration for students registered with the Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL) is 1.5 units

Every year we employ many graduate students to assist with teaching, research, and lab instruction.

  • Their academic units hire teaching assistants (TAs) to assist with teaching and grading courses. These are unionized, hourly positions.
  • Faculty members hire research assistants (RAs) to help with their research. These roles are sometimes called scientific assistants or laboratory instructors. RA salaries come from faculty members’ research grants. Because of this, RA hours, salary, and other details are worked out between you and the faculty member.

Work-study

The work-study program offers part-time jobs on campus that fit your course schedule.

To be eligible, you must:
