Language can change the world. You will study everything from language acquisition and theory to community language needs in our linguistics graduate program. You will acquire valuable skills and competitive skill set to adapt to various workplaces. We train graduate students in three specialized areas: language theory, applied linguistics, and the revival of indigenous languages. We offer doctoral programs that focus on your specific research interests in any professional field.
You will learn the language and explore the intertwined perspectives of learning. You will work under our faculty to solve cutting-edge problems in many fields. We offer research majors in theoretical linguistics, applied linguistics, and the revitalization of indigenous languages.
Our doctoral program will provide you with specific skills in research and analysis through phonology and syntax courses. You will also complete the application documents. The degree ends with a doctoral thesis.
Areas of focus
Applicants whose native language is not English must consult the Faculty of Graduate Studies regulations concerning the English Language Proficiency requirement. The department requires minimum scores as follows for applicants for whom the test is required. For the MA in Applied Linguistics, the department requires 600 on the paper-based test or 100 on the internet-based test. Otherwise, the department requires 580 on the paper-based test or 92 on the internet-based test. For all programs, the minimum acceptable IELTS score is 7.0.
The admissions selection process is competitive. Not all students who meet the minimum requirements will be admitted. Typically, the Department of Linguistics admits between six and eight graduate students each year.
Applicants for admission to the Ph.D. program will normally hold a master’s degree in Linguistics with an A- average (7.0 GPA) on master’s level course work. Applicants should submit one representative piece of written work, often the MA thesis or part of it.
Deadline
All applications must be complete by January 15 for admission the following September. Applications submitted by this deadline are considered for the Graduate Fellowships, which are awarded to incoming students each year by the University, and for other funding sources within the department.
