You will work with outstanding teachers in a department with special strengths in Medieval and Early Modern Studies, Victorian Literature, Modernism, Book and Media Studies, Digital Humanities, and West Coast Literature. We also offer optional courses in Cultural, Social, and Political Thought (CSPT). Other certificates can be obtained through teaching, research grants, and cooperation with other projects.

  • Postcolonial literature
  • Critical theory
  • Period-focused literature
  • Digital humanities and media studies

The eligibility for Phd in English in Canada for both domestic and international student is:

The admission selection process is competitive. Applications are reviewed by the Graduate Admissions and Records Office and then by the English Graduate Committee, which usually makes admission decisions in February and March. Not all students who meet the minimum requirements can be admitted.

In addition to the application materials required by the Faculty of Graduate Studies (see Faculty Admissions), the department requires a statement of intent (not to exceed 2 typed pages), a 10-15 page typed essay demonstrating advanced literary and/or critical studies ability, and a CV. GRE scores are not specifically required, but students who have taken the exam are advised to submit the results since a high score can only strengthen their application.

The Faculty may require international students whose first language is not English of Graduate Studies to demonstrate competency in English (see English Language Proficiency) by providing results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language/TOEFL (with a minimum of 630 on the paper-based test or 101 on the internet-based test) or the International English Language Testing System/IELTS (with an overall score of at least Band 7).

September is the only entry point for Ph.D. students. Admission to the program usually requires an MA degree, with a minimum average of A- in graduate courses. It may be possible for an exceptional student in the University of Victoria MA program to enter the Ph.D. program before completing the MA, but not before the completion of one Winter Session and superior performance in five graduate courses. A limited number of students may also be admitted each year without funding or if they arrive with fellowship funding.

Deadlines

Students who wish to be considered for funding should apply for September entry by January 15. Ph.D. applications received after January 15 cannot be considered.

N.B: Most universities have specific international admission requirements based on different education systems.

These are the test eligibilities for the Phd in English to qualify.

The English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirements for Phd in English in Canada: are:

  • TOEFL(ibt): 101
  • IELTS(academic): 7
N.B: ELP is not mandatory for all international students. You could apply without ELP if your previous degree's medium of instruction were in English. Students of Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia, for example, are not required to take the ELP test.
