Program Overview for MA in Linguistics in Canada:

Language can change the world. You will study everything from language acquisition and theory to community language needs in our linguistics graduate program. You will acquire valuable skills and competitive skill set to adapt to various workplaces. We train graduate students in three specialized areas: language theory, applied linguistics, and the revival of indigenous languages. We offer doctoral programs that focus on your specific research interests in any professional field.

In our Master of Linguistics program, you will study everything from language mutation to theoretical linguistics. You will also learn about language revitalization and community-based research topics.

This degree program combines courses with essays and public lectures. You will receive guidance from supervisors who are experienced in your field of research.

The eligibility for MA in Linguistics in Canada for both domestic and international student is:

Applicants whose native language is not English must consult the Faculty of Graduate Studies regulations concerning the English Language Proficiency requirement. The department requires minimum scores as follows for applicants for whom the test is required. For the MA in Applied Linguistics, the department requires 600 on the paper-based test or 100 on the internet-based test. Otherwise, the department requires 580 on the paper-based test or 92 on the internet-based test. For all programs, the minimum acceptable IELTS score is 7.0.

The admissions selection process is competitive. Not all students who meet the minimum requirements will be admitted. Typically, between six and eight students are admitted to the program each year.

Admission to the program requires a bachelor’s degree, preferably in Linguistics, with a minimum overall average of B+ (6.0 GPA) in the final year’s work. Students without the necessary background in Linguistics may be considered for admission upon completion of LING 311 and/or LING 312 or equivalent with First Class standing.

Deadline

All applications must be complete by January 15 for admission the following September. Applications submitted by this deadline are considered for the Graduate Fellowships, which are awarded to incoming students each year by the University, and for other funding sources within the department.

Graduate students registered in full-time programs are automatically considered for a fellowship. This is based on a qualifying GPA.

• Up to $17,500 per year (masters)
• Up to $20,000 per year (Ph.D.)

Eligibility

• The minimum requirement for funding consideration is an A- average on the last two years of coursework
• Domestic and international students are considered equally for funding
• Full-time registration (3.0 units) for UVic Fellowship holders and at least part-time registration (1.5 units) for UVic Graduate Award holders
• Full-time registration for students registered with the Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL) is 1.5 units

Every year we employ many graduate students to assist with teaching, research, and lab instruction.

• Their academic units hire teaching assistants (TAs) to assist with teaching and grading courses. These are unionized, hourly positions.
• Faculty members hire research assistants (RAs) to help with their research. These roles are sometimes called scientific assistants or laboratory instructors. RA salaries come from faculty members’ research grants. Because of this, RA hours, salary, and other details are worked out between you and the faculty member.

Work-study

The work-study program offers part-time jobs on campus that fit your course schedule.

Co-operative Education Program (co-op)
