Program Overview for LLM in Law & Society in Canada:

UVic Law is widely regarded as one of Canada’s finest law schools. We’re known for our experiential learning and commitment to community engagement and social justice. We have the largest number of clinical placements per student in Canada. We have longstanding partnerships with Indigenous communities and a deeply-held ethic of social contribution.

In PhD program, you’ll study applied legal methodology and conduct original research.

You’ll work closely with your supervisor as well as experts in other disciplines, such as political science and sociology. You’ll study for a candidacy exam and work on a doctoral dissertation. You’ll defend the culminating work in an oral defense.

Completion of a 4-year bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from an institution recognized by Uvic. Equivalent of a minimum “B” average over the last two years of your degree.

The normal expectation for admission to the LLM degree program will be a Bachelor of Laws (LLB), Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent law degree with an average of B+ (6.0 G.P.A.) in the final two years of that law degree program.

Applicants for the LLM program are required to submit a curriculum vitae and a thesis proposal (two-page maximum) for assessment in the admissions process. This proposal may be revised during the student’s time in the program in order that the program can accommodate the student’s areas of interest.
