As a graduate student in our history department, you will explore the influence of historical events over time. Our areas of research range from racism and indigenous history to early modern European and criminal history. Our faculty and staff often explore non-traditional ways of conducting and communicating research, including geographic information systems and digital media. You can also choose to build interdisciplinary knowledge through our interdisciplinary concentration of cultural, social, and political thought.
Master your craft as a historian. In our doctoral program, you will study your era or topics of interest with our famous teachers, with a wide range of research.
We divide courses into geography and topics or topic lines. You will choose one or more specific topics that you want to pursue in your essay. After completing the exam, you will have the opportunity to teach one or more courses, depending on the situation. We will support your transition from researcher to a teacher.
Areas of focus
In addition to reference letters and transcripts required by the Faculty of Graduate Studies, students must send a letter to the Graduate Adviser in the History department outlining their particular area of interest within the field of History and their proposed topic and research strategy for their doctoral dissertation. This letter need not be more than two to three pages long. It will assist the department in determining whether or not it can provide appropriate supervision.
If a student's research program requires reading knowledge of a language other than English, individual supervisors may require proof of competency in that language for the candidate to be considered for admission to the doctoral program.
The program requires as follows:
