Detailed Information of MA in Public History in Canada at University of Victoria

Program Overview for MA in Public History in Canada:

As a graduate student in our history department, you will explore the influence of historical events over time. Our areas of research range from racism and indigenous history to early modern European and criminal history. Our faculty and staff often explore non-traditional ways of conducting and communicating research, including geographic information systems and digital media. You can also choose to build interdisciplinary knowledge through our interdisciplinary concentration of cultural, social, and political thought.

Public history is the study and application of history outside of academia. This program teaches you how to share the history and historical research methods with the public. You will also complete a semester in cooperative work experience to prepare to work in public history organizations such as archives, government, and tourist attractions. You will create a project to incorporate this dynamic education into public historical works. Past projects include websites, podcasts, documentaries, and museum exhibits.

The program requires as follows:

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): A minimum score of 610 on the paper-based test or 101 on the internet-based test.

Subject to the admission requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, admission to the MA program normally requires a bachelor’s degree with a minimum overall average of B+ (6.0 GPA) or a bachelor’s degree with a minimum average of A- (7.0 GPA) in the final year’s work. Many more students apply each year than can be accommodated in the program. A candidate with background deficiencies in History may be required to register for a year as a non-degree undergraduate student before being admitted to the MA program.
