Explore the ancient world through UVic's Greek and Roman studies. We are committed to the investigation and protection of the culture of the Greek and Roman world. In our dynamic master's and doctoral programs, you will gain a foundation in history, literature, and archeology. Armed with this knowledge, you will be ready to face the unique challenges of the modern world.
In our Ph.D. program, you’ll apply the ancient world’s knowledge to contemporary issues. You’ll create a meaningful and productive dialogue between the past and the present. You’ll begin to establish yourself as a professional during your time with us, delivering papers at conferences and traveling for your research.
Our Ph.D. program offers four thematic research areas:
Areas of focus
Applicants to the Ph.D. program are normally required to hold a BA and MA degree in one of the several areas of ancient Greek and Roman Studies. They will be expected to have focused experience in the area relevant to their intended topic of research and appropriate command of the ancient languages of Greek and Latin. Competency in reading German and either French or Italian upon admission is advantageous; students will be required to demonstrate reading knowledge of German and either French or Italian before completion of the Ph.D. degree.
Applicants to the Ph.D. program are normally expected to have achieved a minimum GPA of 7.0 (or equivalent) in their Master’s program, to have strong letters of reference, to present a clear statement of research interests, and to submit an example of scholarly work.
September is the normal entry point; we do not normally accept students at any other time of year. Courses at the graduate level, with the exception of the MA thesis and the Ph.D. candidacy examination and dissertation, are not normally offered in the summer.
The application deadline for consideration for financial aid, particularly for the University of Victoria Fellowships is February 1. Applications received after February 1 will be considered, but applicants will not usually be eligible for funding. The application deadline is June 1 for September admission.
