Program Overview for MA in Germanic or Slavic Studies in Canada:

In Germanic and Slavic studies, you will learn language, culture, and history. You will learn academic and professional skills that will allow you to live and work abroad. You will attend a field school and participate in an international internship. You will study all aspects of culture, from film and literature to language and folklore. We use dynamic learning that encourages intellectual curiosity and critical thinking.

Our expertise comes from three different schools: Germanic, Slavic, and our new approach to the Holocaust.

In this master's degree, you will focus on our Germanic or Slavic studies. You will learn with leading academics in a collaborative environment. We oversee essay projects in literature, cultural history, second language acquisition, and film. In these two genres, you will also have the opportunity to participate in our IWitness field school.

The eligibility for MA in Germanic or Slavic Studies in Canada for both domestic and international student is:

All candidates for the MA streams in Germanic Studies and Slavic Studies must meet all general requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and the specific requirements of the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies.

Students may enter the program in September only. All application materials, including a Letter of Intent offering comment on the applicant’s intended course of studies, must be submitted to the Graduate Admissions and Records Office.

Admission to the program normally requires a Bachelor’s Degree (Major in Germanic or Slavic Studies) with a minimum overall average of B+ (6.0 GPA), or a Bachelor’s Degree (Major in Germanic or Slavic Studies) with a minimum average of A- (7.0 GPA) in the final year’s work.

Admission to the M.A. program in Holocaust Studies normally requires a Bachelor's Degree in a relevant academic discipline with a minimum overall average of B+ (6.00 GPA) or a Bachelor's Degree with a minimum average of A- (7.0 GPA) in the final year's work. Applicants without a baccalaureate degree or equivalent but who can demonstrate significant and appropriate community-based expertise (normally at least 15 years) in the field of Holocaust Studies may be considered in exceptional cases. Applicants to the Holocaust Studies stream must demonstrate their reading competency in one research-appropriate language (other than English). Depending on the nature of the proposed thesis or research project, students may be expected to reach higher proficiency levels in a research-appropriate language during their studies.

Eligibility

  • The minimum requirement for funding consideration is an A- average on the last two years of coursework
  • Domestic and international students are considered equally for funding
  • Full-time registration (3.0 units) for UVic Fellowship holders and at least part-time registration (1.5 units) for UVic Graduate Award holders
  • Full-time registration for students registered with the Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL) is 1.5 units

Every year we employ many graduate students to assist with teaching, research, and lab instruction.

  • Their academic units hire teaching assistants (TAs) to assist with teaching and grading courses. These are unionized, hourly positions.
  • Faculty members hire research assistants (RAs) to help with their research. These roles are sometimes called scientific assistants or laboratory instructors. RA salaries come from faculty members’ research grants. Because of this, RA hours, salary, and other details are worked out between you and the faculty member.

Work-study

The work-study program offers part-time jobs on campus that fit your course schedule.

To be eligible, you must:

  • Be a full-time student
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN)

Co-operative Education Program (co-op)
