Our doctoral program will prepare you for a position in higher education. You will acquire the skills to become a leader at the provincial, national or international level. The plan will give you the ability to influence teaching, policy, plan development, etc. You will write a doctoral thesis to demonstrate your experience in child and adolescent care.
Our graduates work in a range of settings, including:
Areas of focus
All candidates for the degree of Ph.D. in Child and Youth Care must meet all general requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and the specific requirements of the School of Child and Youth Care. Candidates need to have been involved in the CYC field or be strong candidates from a related field.
Except for the sample of academic writing, all application materials must be submitted to the Graduate Admissions and Records Office. Entry to the program is competitive, and enrolment may be restricted in any given year.
Candidates will have a minimum of B+ (6.0 GPA) average and a master’s degree in Child and Youth Care or an allied discipline that demonstrates research experience and a capacity to conduct research. (Candidates whose previous degrees do not have a research component will be required to undertake and write a qualifying research activity.)
Each candidate accepted into the program will require one faculty member who is their agreed supervisor and a second faculty member who will serve on their supervisory committee. The availability of faculty supervisors restricts admission to the program. The SCYC faculty make admissions decisions.
Candidates are strongly encouraged to apply for external funding and should indicate on their applications where they have applied for such funding.
In addition to the documentation required by the Faculty of Graduate Studies, the School of Child and Youth Care requires that applicants submit the following:
A faculty admissions committee will interview all short-listed candidates.
The deadline for applying is January 15. Please note that the School accepts students for a September entry only. Completed applications submitted by these deadlines are automatically considered for the University of Victoria Fellowships. The School accepts Ph.D. students in odd-numbered years.
