Detailed Information of PhD in Biochemistry or Microbiology in Canada at University of Victoria

Program Overview for PhD in Biochemistry or Microbiology in Canada:

In our biochemistry and microbiology graduate programs, you will learn the foundations of molecular biology and biotechnology.

Your research can involve molecular and microbial pathogenesis; gene expression and cell signalling; immunology; or diagnostics, therapeutics and vaccines. MSc and PhD programs are offered, with a focus on the mechanisms of improving health and the environment.

As a grad student, you will have access to our research facilities. These include the UVic Genome BC Proteomics Centre, as well as an in-house X-ray Crystallography suite, flow cytometry and cell sorting facilities, and Next-Generation sequencing platforms.

Areas of focus

  • Structural biology
  • Pathogenesis
  • Proteomics
  • Mucosal immunology
  • Regulation of gene expression
  • Epigenetics
  • Cellular signaling
  • Environmental contaminants
  • Immune system responses to cancer

The eligibility for PhD in Biochemistry or Microbiology in Canada for both domestic and international student is:

Applicants whose native language is not English should submit their application proof of English competency (see English Language Proficiency). The Department requires a minimum TOEFL exam score of 100 (on the internet-based exam) or an overall IELTS score of 7.0 with no score of less than 6.5 on each academic component.

The Department’s Graduate Committee will screen applications that meet the requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Applicants without sufficient background in biochemistry and/or microbiology may be refused admittance or required to take additional undergraduate courses in these disciplines as part of their graduate degree program. The final entry into the program requires a financial and supervisory commitment from an individual faculty member.

The Ph.D. program requires either an MSc in a cognate discipline from a recognized university or a formal transfer from the department’s MSc program. Transfer requires successful completion of all graduate courses and the candidacy exam (see below).

Completing an acceptable master’s degree (or equivalent) from an institution recognized by UVic Any requirements specific to your program of study or You may be considered if you have the equivalent of an A- average in the last two years of a bachelor’s degree. Any requirements specific to your program of study

Preference for admission will be given to students who have a GPA of at least 77% (B+ average, 3.65 on a 4 point scale, high Second Class in Britain) in the last two undergraduate years of study. However, the department will consider students with a minimum GPA of 73% for the last two years of study (B average) who have a demonstrated record of research ability.

N.B: Most universities have specific international admission requirements based on different education systems.

These are the test eligibilities for the PhD in Biochemistry or Microbiology to qualify.

The English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirements for PhD in Biochemistry or Microbiology in Canada: are:

  • TOEFL(ibt): 90
  • IELTS(academic): 6.5
N.B: ELP is not mandatory for all international students. You could apply without ELP if your previous degree's medium of instruction were in English. Students of Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia, for example, are not required to take the ELP test.

All graduate students must have a faculty member who serves as their academic supervisor. When you apply:

  • You must list a potential supervisor on your application
  • This faculty member must agree to be your supervisor and recommend your admission.

To find a supervisor, review the faculty contacts. When you've found a faculty member whose research complements your own, contact them by email.

Graduate students registered in full-time programs are automatically considered for a fellowship. This is based on a qualifying GPA.

Individual award amounts may vary depending on the program.

UVic Fellowship Awards

  • Up to $17,500 per year (masters)
  • Up to $20,000 per year (Ph.D.)

UVic Graduate Awards

  • Up to $10,000 per year (masters and PhD)

Eligibility

  • The minimum requirement for funding consideration is an A- average on the last two years of coursework
  • Domestic and international students are considered equally for funding
  • Full-time registration (3.0 units) for UVic Fellowship holders and at least part-time registration (1.5 units) for UVic Graduate Award holders
  • Full-time registration for students registered with the Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL) is 1.5 units

Every year we employ many graduate students to assist with teaching, research, and lab instruction.

  • Their academic units hire teaching assistants (TAs) to assist with teaching and grading courses. These are unionized, hourly positions.
  • Faculty members hire research assistants (RAs) to help with their research. These roles are sometimes called scientific assistants or laboratory instructors. RA salaries come from faculty members’ research grants. Because of this, RA hours, salary, and other details are worked out between you and the faculty member.
