The Bachelor of Education program at VIU provides students with the fundamentals needed to become elementary or secondary school teachers.
Throughout the five-year program, students will learn diverse teaching strategies and professional development skills to give them the tools and knowledge required to earn their BC teachers certificate and begin their teaching journey.
Students in VIU's Bachelor of Education program receive personalized attention from dedicated faculty who have experience in the K-12 classroom and who care about their students' success.
The program prepares students for teaching at various grade levels and has a clear foundation in teaching principles, integrated and extended practices, and principles of indigenous learning. Based on the redesigned British Columbia curriculum, the program and its delivery provide information through personalized learning, providing a more flexible learning environment, green and environmental learning proficiency, and indigenous knowledge and perspectives. Curriculum teaching focuses on core competencies, big ideas, and developing current research and reflection practices.
Upon successful completion, graduates will become qualified junior teachers and will be recommended to the British Columbia Department of Education's Teacher Certification Division (TCB) for "professional certification." This certification is required to work in any BC public school, independent school, or BC offshore school.
The program consists of undergraduate education courses and courses from different disciplines, including arts, humanities, social sciences, science, and human services. Undergraduate elective courses are mainly completed in the first two years of the project, and education and field experience courses are conducted in the last three years of the project. Courses are held at the Nanaimo or Cowichan campuses.
Students enrolled at the Cowichan campus have the opportunity to take a comprehensive course that fully integrates the views and knowledge of the local Aboriginal people. Educational courses and field experience are not offered during the summer months.
Students who complete this degree may obtain minor courses from other degree programs to supplement their Bachelor of Education. To do this, they must meet all the requirements for minors in other degrees and the requirements for a bachelor's degree in education. Students wishing to study a second course should consult with a consultant from the College of Education to discuss degree completion requirements and the impact of their teaching career on the choice of minor courses.
The course can be enrolled in the first or third year. The first to third year is professional preparation courses, which include training courses for teachers and non-teachers. 4-5 years are professional, including teacher training courses and internships with primary or secondary focus.

The College of Education's "Access Program" aims to provide access opportunities to members of our society who have historically been underrepresented in the British Columbia teaching profession. We encourage Aboriginal applicants to self-identify and apply per the visit plan in the applicant's third-year intake profile to achieve this goal.
