Program Overview for Global Studies (BA) in Canada:

Internationalization is rapidly changing the world. A degree in global studies can provide you with the broader perspective you need to become a true global citizen. 

VIU's global research program studies the causes, effects, and responses of globalization from a multidisciplinary perspective, including anthropology, economics, geography, political science, and sociology.

The program also includes a strong internship section that enables successful applicants to work in various international settings. Graduates continue to inspire careers in international development and globalization, international relations, government policy analysis, and various positions in nongovernmental organizations. 

Globalization is changing who we are, how and where we live and work. To act responsibly in this new world, it is increasingly important to be able to see it on a global scale and to develop knowledge and skills for ecological and social sustainability.

The Global Research Program studies the causes and effects of globalization and its response to globalization from a multidisciplinary perspective. It draws on insights from anthropology, economics, geography, political science, and sociology.

Courses are taught individually and/or in teams by teachers of these social science disciplines and create an inclusive learning and social environment. In essence, it provides opportunities for students of different backgrounds to learn from each other. 
 

This program aims to impart skills and knowledge to understand, live and work in an increasingly interdependent and changing world, focusing on:

  • International mobility of capital and labor, the emergence of multinational companies, business groups, international economic organizations, international business practices and problems, current and alternative economic indicators.
  •  Alternatives to social and cultural changes, concerns about inequality and social justice, ethnic and intercultural relations, population and health issues, technology and society, social movements, communities, and international development.
  • The world area of ​​biophysics and human environment; the allocation, supply, and use of natural resources; environmental change, sustainability, and human impact; land, agriculture, and water resources development issues; environmental analysis methods.
  • Views on contemporary political systems, national sovereignty and political changes, international conflicts, international governments, and non-governmental organizations, views on world order, and the continued development of international law in various key areas, including the environment, human rights, and non-governmental organizations-government organizations, research will be conducted in applied environments, such as overseas field trips and services with non-governmental organizations. 

 
Vancouver Island University also provides students with opportunities to gain international experience and skills development in Canada and abroad through the following methods: 

  • Internship opportunities with government, non-governmental and private organizations dedicated to international development work; 
     work and study abroad; 
  • courses Foreign language courses;
  • Field school experience.
  • Global Studies provides good preparation for future studies or careers in law, journalism, international business and marketing, international economic and social development, and the fields of human rights and social justice.

  • Proof of English language proficiency
  • International students who are BC high school graduates must have a minimum grade of “C” in English 12 for direct entry into an academic program.
  • Official transcript of grades from high school (and post-secondary institutions where applicable).
  • A minimum "C+" grade in one of Principles of Mathematics 11, Applications of Mathematics 11, Foundations of Mathematics 11, Pre-calculus 11, or equivalent. A mathematics assessment and placement examination is available for applicants without this admission requirement.

Canadian citizens and those with permanent residence status in Canada are eligible for admission to University Academic programs if they meet one of the following conditions:

  • graduation from a B.C. secondary school, or equivalent, with a minimum “C” grade in either English 12 or English 12 First Peoples;
  • visiting student from a college or university (a “Letter of Permission” from the home institution is required);
  • a transfer student from a college or university (at least 24 transferable university-level credits completed);
  • English 12 with a minimum "C+" grade or equivalent.
  • A minimum "C+" grade in one of Principles of Mathematics 11, Applications of Mathematics 11, Foundations of Mathematics 11, Pre-calculus 11, or equivalent. A mathematics assessment and placement examination is available for applicants without this admission requirement.
