The Mathematical and Computational Sciences at Western are represented by four separate departments:

The Department of Mathematics has established research groups in several areas of contemporary mathematics including algebra, analysis and analytic geometry, homotopy theory, and noncommutative geometry.

We know some students may be facing additional financial challenges, even with the maintenance of our funding guarantee. We are looking at the possibility of some funding relief and are working with our provincial and federal partners to address issues that fall within their purview. Over the coming weeks, we will provide more information to you via and email and on this page as it becomes available regarding available financial supports, including possible government actions in areas such as study/work permits, student loan policies and/or EI eligibility.

In our pursuit of scholarly and research excellence, Western is committed to graduate education. Western places great importance on helping graduate students finance their education, and we will continue to ensure that the university community is fully aware of all the funding opportunities available to help students succeed.

Western's Doctoral Funding Guarantee

While at Western, you will want to devote your full energy to the successful completion of your studies, so we want to ensure that stable funding is available to you. Western guarantees minimum annual funding for doctoral students, from all sources, of $13,000 plus tuition.

For doctoral students who start in September 2020 (September 1, 2020 – August 31, 2021), the Doctoral Funding Guarantee for domestic and international students is $19,360.

In addition to the financial support available from federal and provincial sources and research grant support, Western offers a variety of internal awards that are among the best available to outstanding scholars in Canada. Full-time Western graduate students are eligible for support from the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, provided they meet the appropriate criteria.

The bulk of the applications are considered around the above deadlines; however, if a deadline has not been met and there are still spaces available, we will still consider the application, provided there is reasonable time for approved applicants to make travel plans and obtain student visas, etc.

Acceptance notifications can take place at any time but the bulk of the admissions are normally for the Fall term and most notifications will be sent out between mid-February and the end of March.Western recognizes that students who choose to undertake full-time graduate studies are choosing to delay their entry into the full-time workforce.
