Program Overview for Psychology (MA) in Canada:

You will gain valuable work experience as a community consultant in our community psychology field through our practice. You will spend 200 hours in a physical location learning important practical skills while using action, theory, and research (ART) models to reflect on your practical experience critically. 

In community psychology, we will teach you to use ecological, value-based, and action-oriented methods to conduct research, focusing on the individual and the social, physical, and community environment of personal life.

ADVANCE YOUR RESEARCH ABILITIES AND INTERESTS

In developmental and social psychology, we believe that great researchers are trained in a supportive learning environment. As soon as you start either of these program fields, you’ll begin researching with a faculty adviser in your first year.

Research Focus

Examples of research projects currently being conducted in the department include:

  • Taking culture seriously in community mental health (Community).
  • Housing, self-help/mutual aid, and community support projects for people with physical, developmental, and/or mental health challenges (Community).
  • Aging and intergenerational relationships (Developmental).
  • Child memory and learning (Developmental).
  • Self and social cognition (Social).
  • Factors that affect women's and minority group's psychological and social responses to experiences of discrimination (Social).

Historically, our students have been placed in government departments, community agencies, schools, non-profit organizations, and grassroots settings.

The eligibility for Psychology (MA) in Canada for both domestic and international student is:

  • A master's degree in psychology or related field with a minimum A- standing
  • The Graduate Record Examinations general test is required to apply to the behavioral and cognitive neuroscience fields. It is recommended if you want to apply to the social psychology field.
  • If you want to apply to the community psychology field, you need substantial experience in community practice.
  • Proficiency in English.
  • Applications are reviewed by the graduate program committee, which considers all prior university grades, a statement of research interests, and letters of reference.

After you have submitted your OUAC application, paid the non-refundable application fee, and Laurier has received your application, you'll receive an email from gradadmissions@wlu.ca advising you to upload the additional required documentation to Laurier’s Online Registration & Information System (LORIS).

An application for admission to our MA/MSc programs in Psychology must include:

  • The Application Summary is generated after you complete your OUAC application (log back into OUAC to retrieve it).
  • Transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work.
  • A completed statement of intent.
  • A resume of your academic and work experience. Include a history of your publication and scholarly paper activity, and any other information you feel will interest the admissions committee.
  • A sample of your scholarly writing (10-20 pages in length). This may be a paper written for a senior undergraduate course.
  • Completed reference forms. Two academic references are required. Applicants to the community psychology field are required to submit, in addition to two academic references, one professional reference letter. Note: Reference forms are electronically submitted to Laurier by the referee and do not need to be uploaded.

Proficiency in written and spoken English is essential to graduate studies at Laurier. Applicants whose language of instruction during their previous postsecondary education was not in English must submit evidence of proficiency in English. If applicable, results from accepted testing services must be uploaded to LORIS.


N.B: Most universities have specific international admission requirements based on different education systems.

The tuition fees are based on the term(Not per academic year). Wilfred offers generous funding to its graduate students. Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA), Research Assistant, Contract Teaching Faculty (CTF), Internal scholarships and awards, and external funding are also available to support students. Some other funding includes:

  • Winners of major external awards (OGS, QEII, and Tri-Council) may be eligible for top-up funding, which includes the Dean's Graduate Scholarship (total value exceeds $10,000)
  • Eligible domestic students admitted studying full-time are entitled to one year of funding totaling, on average, $14,500. This support may be made up of teaching assistantships, internal/external scholarships, and/or faculty-funded studentships or research assistantships.
