Detailed Information of Master of Counselling in Canada at University of Lethbridge

Program Overview for Master of Counselling in Canada:

The Master of Consulting program is accepting applications for the summer (May) of 2022. As a Master of Counseling student, you will experience a distance course designed to prepare you for a career as a certified consultant or registered psychologist in Canada. 

In this program: 

  • You will be part of a diverse and distributed learning community
  • You will receive quality education through hybrid online courses and face-to-face components (summer colleges and internship seminars),
  • You will experience supervision in an environment of Counseling Psychology Practice, benefits from a supportive and personal learning environment, learns with experienced teachers and practicing counselors. 

Twelve courses of the Master of Counseling program are completed in three years in the form of coeducation. The summer semester includes an online part and a two-week face-to-face part in July. Fall and spring courses are available online. Provide on-campus accommodation. 

Although the program is designed to accommodate working professionals, students are encouraged to limit other obligations during the program. Many students reduce or adjust working hours during the internship. 

Note for international students: More than 50% of the courses in the program are taught online. Please note that due to the comprehensive nature of the project, graduates will not be eligible to apply for a postgraduate work permit after completing the project.

The eligibility for Master of Counselling in Canada for both domestic and international student is:

Applicants will meet the following minimum requirements to be considered for admission:

  • Hold a baccalaureate degree (i.e. undergraduate degree) from a recognized degree-granting institution, in the discipline of interest or in a closely cognate discipline.
  • Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 in the terms containing the last 20 graded university courses (60.0 credit hours).
  • Breadth of undergraduate courses in counselling, educational psychology or psychology. Particular emphasis is paid to courses in human development, learning, personality, psychological disorders (abnormal psychology), and counseling and/or interpersonal skills.
  • Approximately two years of work experience in a counselling or related setting. Volunteer experience in counselling settings is also desirable. Applicants submit a Fieldwork Experience form to describe details of relevant paid or volunteer experience.
  • Demonstrate English language proficiency (ELP) for graduate students.
  • Unofficial Transcripts and Official Transcripts
  • Three (3) reference letters, two (2) of which must be academic
  • Letter of Intent(Your Letter of Intent should generally be no more than one page in length, or up to 500 words.)
  • CV

The following criteria are used in the selection process:

  • Grade point average
  • Relevancy of undergraduate degree
  • Breadth of undergraduate courses
  • References
  • Relevant work and/or volunteer experience
  • Results of interview

N.B: Most universities have specific international admission requirements based on different education systems.

N.B: ELP is not mandatory for all international students. You could apply without ELP if your previous degree's medium of instruction were in English. Students of Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia, for example, are not required to take the ELP test.
