Program Overview for Master of Science Earth Sciences in Canada:

The Ottawa Carleton Earth Science Center (OCGC) was established in 1982, combining the research advantages of the University of Ottawa and Carleton University. The center offers postgraduate courses, earning Master of Earth Sciences (MSc) and Ph.D. (PhD) degrees. Research facilities are shared between the two campuses. Students can use the professors, courses, and facilities of the two universities, however, they must register with the "home university" of the thesis supervisor. 

The center is one of the units participating in the cooperative projects of chemistry and environmental toxicology (master's and doctorate level) and environmental sustainability (master's level).

The eligibility for Master of Science Earth Sciences in Canada for both domestic and international student is:

  • Have a bachelor’s degree with a specialization or a major in earth sciences (or equivalent) with an overall average of 70 % (B).
  • Demonstrate a good academic performance in previous studies as shown by official transcripts, research reports, abstracts, or other documents demonstrating research skills.
  • Meet the funding requirements.

Note: International students must provide proof of financial support: i.e., a stipend provided by a supervisor and a combination of awards and/or trust funds.

  • Identify at least one professor who is willing to supervise your research and thesis.
    • We recommend that you contact potential thesis supervisors as soon as possible.
    • To register, you need to have been accepted by a thesis supervisor.
    • The supervisor’s name is required at the time of application.
    • The choice of supervisor will determine the primary campus location of the student. It will also determine which university awards the degree.

  • A letter of intent outlining your career goals and proposed research area. We recommend that you contact potential thesis supervisors early. To register, you need to be accepted by a thesis supervisor.

  • Please note that non-required admission documents will not be consulted, conserved, or returned to the student. These documents will be destroyed according to our administrative procedures.

The differential tuition fee exemption cannot be combined with the Education Bursary for International Master’s Students or the International Doctoral Scholarship.
