As established by the Faculty of Graduate Studies, the entrance requirement is an Honours Bachelor Degree or the equivalent of honours with at least a B average (3.0 GPA) from a university recognized by the Senate of Dalhousie University.

A four-year Baccalaureate degree may be considered as the equivalent of honours if there is significant evidence of independent research capacity. Admission to the School is competitive and an academic level of a high B+ (3.3 GPA) or better is generally held by successful applicants.

The school strongly encourages applications to be filed by January 31. Early applications will receive priority consideration. However, we warmly welcome applicants through February and March, if space permits. Admissions is for September intake only.

Master of Environmental Studies (MES) applicants must contact one or more core School for Resource and Environmental Studies (SRES) professors. Applicants should reach out to faculty members with similar areas of interest in order to begin a conversation about alignment with the School and establishing a potential supervisor relationship.

This should be done well before applying. Please download our prepared document How to express interest in working with a SRES Professor [PDF - 81kb] for guidance.

Other application materials:

  1. two strong references (at least one Academic in nature),
  2. evidence from a resume of relevant experience (work, school or volunteer),
  3. a viable statement of research interest, and
