International Development Studies at Dalhousie teaches you how to be a responsible and informed global citizen. You'll learn to think critically and act on a global scale as you try to find solutions to big problems.
Careers and future study:
We train people to be active, engaged, and informed citizens. Your IDS degree will allow you to understand many foundational elements of our society: history, economics, sociology, and politics. A degree in International Development Studies provides a great background for many social careers, including:
- foreign correspondent
- teacher
- International aid worker
- immigration officer
- economic development officer
Future studies could include programs at the graduate level in international development studies, sociology, and social anthropology or non-profit business administration. Or you might choose to complete a professional degree in law or a health profession, advanced farm management, or education.

You’ll need to meet the general admission requirements as well as the program specific admission requirements before you can apply.
Minimum admission requirements:
- Completion of secondary school (Grade 12)
- A minimum overall average of 70% in five academic Grade 12 courses
- A final grade of at least 70% in Grade 12 academic English and any other required subject (see list below)
Please note: Admission to many programs at Dalhousie is competitive; meeting the minimum average doesn’t guarantee admission. Typically, 70% or higher is necessary in all required subjects for early admission.
If you don’t currently meet these requirements, you may be eligible for one of our upgrading or pathway programs.
International High School Applicant Requirment Based on Curriculum:
- Advanced Placement (AP)
- Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE)
- French Baccalauréat
- GCE A Level (British System)
- Home-schooled applicants

You'll be assessed based on the equivalency of your home country.
