Detailed Information of MA in Philosophy in Canada at Dalhousie University

Program Overview for MA in Philosophy in Canada:

The Master of Arts (MA) Program in Philosophy is for students enrolled in the four-year Canadian honours BA in philosophy or the equivalent. Students will traditionally take three classes during each of the fall and winter terms, and write a thesis during the summer term following classes.

Many of our MA students have gone on to PhD programs in Canada and the United States, including: Alberta, Calgary, McGill, Toronto, Queen's Western Ontario, UBC, York, Columbia, Connecticut, Cornell, DUNY, Johns Hopkins, Maryland, North Carolina, Rochester, Rutgers, and Syracuse.

Average completion time for the degree is approximately 13 month

The eligibility for MA in Philosophy in Canada for both domestic and international student is:

Admission to our graduate program is competitive. We admit those applicants who appear to be the most likely to succeed in our programs. There are qualifications that we generally look for in all applications. These include your grades and your background in philosophy. Details on the accepted standards in these areas may be viewed below.

Grade requirements:

To be considered for any of our graduate degree programmes, candidates should have at least an A- average in the most recent ten full credits of their academic career.
A ""full credit"" is the equivalent of one class running the full academic year; the usual half-year class is a ""half credit,"" and the usual full-time undergraduate academic year is five full credits. (Classes in progress when you apply are not counted in the ten credits.) What is an A- average?

Given the variety of mark scales used, it's difficult to provide a general account of how we'd calculate this. If you're not sure whether you'd meet this requirement, ask for advice from the Dalhousie Philosophy Department Graduate Coordinator.

Please note that if you are not sure your previous philosophy degree satisfies the above requirements for admission to the graduate program, you may contact the philosophy Graduate Coordinator for advice.

Funding:

Full-time MA students not receiving other funding normally receive a fellowship/teaching assistantship. Approximately 20% of our MA students have been awarded a Killam Fellowship. Canadian applicants to the MA program are strongly encouraged to apply for funding from SSHRCC.

Information for Non-Canadian:

A further difficulty is that a good deal of the funding we have available comes from sources which allow grants to Canadian citizens and permanent residents; as a result, we are often unable to offer any financial aid to applicants from abroad.

If you have the promise of sufficient funding from non-Dalhousie sources, such as a grant from your home country or your own funds, then these considerations will not be problems for you. If you apply here, you should send the Graduate Coordinator in the Philosophy Department a letter giving some idea of your prospects for external funding.

You also need:

  • A one-page statement of your interests
  • A short (10-20 page) sample of your written work.
  • Official transcripts should be emailed directly from any university or college you have attended.

Other Application Documents you need:

  1. Official Transcripts
  2. Letter of recommendation (2)
  3. Updated CV/Resume
  4. Statement of Purpose
