Program Overview for MA/PhD in History in Canada:

We offer both master's and doctoral degree programs in a range of geographical and thematic areas of research. Small enough to provide individualized attention and large enough to be known internationally, our programs are characterized by a vibrant intellectual environment. The eligibility for MA/PhD in History in Canada for both domestic and international student is:

Candidates for the one year MA degree must hold a BA four year degree in history or a general history BA degree. Common Master's admission requirements:

  • Four-year Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B average) in the last 60 credit hours of study
  • Degree granted by university of recognized standing

PhD admission requirements:

  • First-class thesis Master’s degree or its equivalent
  • Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B average) in the last 60 credit hours of study
  • Degree granted by university of recognized standing
  • Most candidates for admission to a doctoral program possess a Master's Degree. Direct entry to some programs is possible for those with exceptional academic standing

Scholarship funding:

The History Department cannot guarantee funding for PhD applications, and only modest funding for M.A. applications. PhD applicants are strongly encouraged to inform themselves about SSHRC applications, which are now due in early October, as well as the Harmonized Scholarship Process overseen by the Faculty of Graduate Studies. M.A. applicants should be aware that the deadline for SSHRC applications is in early December.
