The Department of English and Theatre offers a twelve-month, full-time program leading to a Master’s degree in English literature. Participating in small seminar classes, students have the opportunity to broaden their understanding of the discipline and to write a thesis based on their area of interest.
Where possible, students are also offered the opportunity to gain teaching experience. Whether you are interested in pursuing an MA program as a step towards doctoral studies or towards a professional degree, you will feel supported in your decision to apply for the program. In doing a thesis, a major component of the MA program, the Department offers you training in writing that will be key to doctoral studies and help you acquire self-discipline and time management skills essential to any profession.

Requirements
Applicants for admission should hold a BA Honours degree in English or equivalent.
A TOEFL score is required if English was not the language of instruction in your previous academic program. The minimum score required by the Department is 630 (paper-based) or 93 (internet-based). For an IBT, a minimum score of 22 in each of the 4 categories (reading skills, speaking skills, listening skills, and writing skills) is required. We also accept an overall IELTS of 6.5 or higher (with no subtest score below 6.0).
The English language requirement MUST be met at the time of application.

Funding
We offer a limited number of entrance Acadia Graduate Awards valued at $9,450 to qualifying students. To be considered for this funding, you need to apply for admission to the MA program no later than February 1st. In addition, the English Department offers four other fellowships and scholarships to complement the Graduate Award.
