The Master of Contemporary Art, Design and New Media Art Story at OCAD University is unique in Canada because it focuses on contemporary art, design, media production, and theory. 

In this interdisciplinary course, you will participate in contemporary issues and work while using the theoretical framework, historical background, and creative precedents that shape today’s visual and critical landscape.

The project facility is located in the heart of the Toronto Arts and Cultural District, close to the Ontario Art Gallery, Toronto International Film Festival and Design Exchange Center, Canadian Textile Museum, Gardner Museum, Royal Ontario Museum, and Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery. 

The program is small (accepting 68 students per year) and allows direct access to the professional knowledge and supervision of teachers. The main professors of this project are internationally renowned scholars, writers, historians, and curators active in their respective fields.

The professional knowledge of teachers promotes diversified methods and curricula and supports cutting-edge research by students. 
 In many cases, the program can provide generous funding programs. Most first-year students obtain teaching assistants in undergraduate art and design history courses, providing valuable teaching experience. 

To apply for this course, you must have a four-year bachelor's degree in art history, visual culture, film studies, communication, or similar courses, and have an average grade of at least 75% (B +) in the last two years of studying. 

You can take a series of courses in contemporary art history, design history, and media studies, as well as elective courses offered in the other six OCAD U graduate courses. In addition, there are opportunities to develop independent study courses with faculty members, participate in study courses around the world, and earn internship credits.

Application for admission into the MA in Contemporary Art, Design, and New Media Art Histories is competitive. Applicants must hold a BA, BFA, BDes, or comparable honors degree/certification with an average of 75 percent (B+) or better during the last two years of study, or must demonstrate exceptional related experience/expertise as a practicing art or design professional. All applicants must demonstrate creative and conceptual competence at a high level. Other Admission Requirement:

  • Research Proposal: Maximum 500-word statement that clearly describes your research interests for graduate work in the Contemporary Art, Design, and New Media Art Histories program. Bibliography and illustrations may be included.
  • Writing Sample: The writing sample should reflect recent work and demonstrate scholarly writing abilities. Maximum 20 pages. Examples of writing samples include published articles or term papers.
  • CV: Applicants should include an updated copy of their curriculum vitae.
  • Potential Advisors: Please name up to two members of the Graduate Studies faculty you would be interested in working with as advisors for your Major Research Paper (MRP) and why you would like to work with them (200 word maximum)
  • Transcripts
  • Three (3) reference letters.
