Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Program in USA: established in 1999, is a 1.6 billion dollar initiative funded by grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. It provides the education cost of the selected candiates.

The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) program was established in 1999 as a $ 1.6 billion program funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The goal of the GMS program is to promote academic excellence and provide opportunities for gifted minority students with significant financial need to reach their full potential by: 

  • Reduce African Americans, American Indians / Alaska Natives, Islanders with financial disabilities in the Asia Pacific region US and Hispanic American students with high academic and leadership skills have great financial needs. 
  • Increase representation of these target groups in the disciplines of computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health, and science. 
  • Through the promotion of the successful completion of bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees, you will cultivate diverse future leaders for America. 
  • Provides ongoing support from undergraduate through doctoral programs for students who are selected as Gates Millennium Scholars to enter the target disciplines.

The Gates Millennium Scholars(GMS) Program Accomplishment


GMS selects 1,000 new scholarship recipients each year, and since 2000, we have now funded more than 20,000 Gates scholarship recipients. 

  • Approximately 54% of scholarship recipients are first-generation students, who are the first students in their families to go to college. The average GPA of 
  • college students is just over 3.0. The average retention rate of 
  • Gates Scholars undergraduate freshmen is 96.2% (active or deferred); the average second-year interest rate is 93.2% (active/deferred). 
  • The 6-year graduation rate is close to 90%, compared to 58% of all college students in the United States (especially low-income students, this number is about 41%). 
  • Nearly 37.5% of Gates Millennium Scholars were transferred to graduate school after obtaining a bachelor's degree. 4,444 Gates Millennium Scholars have been registered at 1,742 different colleges and universities. Since the program began, 4,444 and 14,677 Gates Millennium Scholars have completed their studies. 4,444 Among freshmen actively enrolled in the 2015 cohort, 40.9% (n = 399) enrolled in highly selective colleges that admitted one-third or fewer applicants. 51.1% (n = 499) admitted 40% or fewer applicants. 58.7% (n = 574) admitted less than half of the applicants. 4,444 Gates Scholars came from all 50 states and all US territories and federations.

Selection Criteria:

Each application is first evaluated according to a complete package, which includes the following: student application, nomination form, and recommendation form, which assesses the student's academic performance, community service, and leadership potential; however, no factor determines the result of the request.

Does GMS provide graduate funding?

Continuing Gates scholars can apply for scholarships for graduate programs in one of the following disciplines: computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health, or science. The Gates Millennium Scholars Scholarship can be used at any accredited American college or university of your choice. Postgraduate funding is only provided to Gates scholars who are currently studying for postgraduate studies.

Gates Millennium Scholars Program Scholarships can be used at any accredited US college or university of your choice and provide any undergraduate study specialization.

When the GMS are selected?

Students who applied before the deadline will be notified in March. The selection and notification process of is as follows: 

February: Independent readers complete personalized reading and scoring assessment of eligible students in three main areas: 

  • Academic performance 
  • Community service 
  • Leadership potential 

March: Notification and notification of students' selection Or not selected. 

Mid-March to May: Starting in mid-March, finalists will be notified whether they are selected as Gates Millennium Scholars. All selected Gates millennial scholars will be notified by May.
