Country: Canada Level: Graduate & Phd Scholarship for: Domestic and International Students University: Dalhousie University

Dalhousie awards Killam Predoctoral Scholarships on a competitive basis to outstanding graduate students in thesis-based programs (Master's or Doctoral level) in any discipline in the sciences, engineering, humanities, and social sciences.

Candidates are selected from the Harmonized Scholarship Process based on departmental support and the results of the university-level review process.

Eligibility For Dalhousie Killam Predoctoral Scholarships:

  • Killam Awards are open to both Canadian and International applicants.
  • Applicants are expected to have also applied for funding from relevant provincial, national or international agencies. For Canadians, this may include NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR, NSHRF, NSGS, etc, as applicable to their discipline. For non-Canadian, applicants are expected to have applied for provincial scholarships (NSGS, etc.) and national/international scholarships for which they would be eligible.
  • Killam Predoctoral Scholarship holders must be eligible to receive scholarship support for at least two years. This means that at the Master's level only newly entering students will be considered. At a Doctoral level, only students who have spent less than 24 months in the program by May 1st of the award year will be considered.
  • Awardees must take up their awards in the earliest possible term, so in-program awardees at the doctoral level are expected to begin their award on May 1st

Value and Duration For Dalhousie Killam Predoctoral Scholarships:

Master's (Level 1): $6666.66 per term + ITF (international students) + relocation allowance (if applicable)

Doctoral (Level 2): $10000 per term + relocation allowance (if applicable) + President's Award for two years. Note that Dalhousie Ph.D. programs no longer have International Tuition Fees applied.

Ph.D. students may hold a Level 2 scholarship for up to 36 months, potentially extended to up to 48 months if they are successful in obtaining a Tri-agency doctoral scholarship during the Killam award period (but not past the end of their fourth year in program).

A student who also receives other FGS-Managed awards (Tri-agency doctoral, NSGS, Scotia Scholar, MSSU, etc.) will be subject to FGS funding stacking rules, resulting in the Killam or other awards being designated as honorary for some or all of the award duration. For complete details on funding stacking rules and management of awards, please review the Maintaining Graduate Funding [PDF - 33kb] document.

Interruptions require supporting documentation such as proof of birth or adoption before reinstatement of the award. Killam scholars who are considering parental leave are encouraged to reach out to fgs.slo@dal.ca to discuss management of their awards.
