As the only graduate program in cultural studies in Western Canada, the University of Winnipeg's Multidisciplinary Master of Cultural Studies is an innovative 12-month course-style program offering specializations in cultural or curatorial text and practice. What are cultural studies? 

Cultural research is an interdisciplinary field that draws on the theories and practices of a number of humanities and social sciences and aims to study the way culture is produced and produced. The core of cultural studies is a series of questions, such as what constitutes a text, how certain texts, visual images, and cultural products are more valuable than other texts, and how questions of value relating to the distribution of power and authority.

Rather than focusing solely on the elite text groups that make up so-called "high culture," cultural research focuses on the very complex of ever-changing beliefs, thoughts, feelings, values, and symbols that define the organization and the meaning of community. In this sense, culture is often understood as the main carrier of globalization in the contemporary world and is deeply integrated into the specific social, economic and political environment. Therefore, when we study culture, we are studying the world we live in and how we operate in it. 

What is the Master of Cultural Studies program at the University of Winnipeg? 
Small seminars, the personal attention of full-time lecturers, and strong academic development are just some of the benefits of being a Master of Cultural Studies student. Students specialize in one of the following two areas: 1) text and culture, with an emphasis on cultural analysis based on theory, and 2) curatorial practice, with a focus on museum research. 

Master of Cultural Studies students have taken a total of 24 credits (equivalent to 4 one-year courses) in various disciplines including cultural theory; visual culture; curatorial practice; childhood culture; gender, sexual orientation, And culture; local, national, and global culture; handwriting, printing and digital culture. 

What is a multidisciplinary degree?

The multidisciplinary degree allows you to study courses in a variety of subject areas. The master's degree in cultural studies incorporates theories and methods from multiple disciplines, including literary studies, history, art history, women and gender studies, politics and rhetoric, and communication studies. In the Master of Cultural Studies program at the University of Winnipeg, lecturers in these disciplines regularly teach the courses in the course and can participate in special research courses in which they lead individual students’ research projects. 

What should students study to prepare for the Master of Cultural Studies? 

The cultural study is an academic field that uses criticism and cultural theories to study cultural phenomena. Therefore, it is recommended that students choose courses that use feminist theory, social theory, political theory, literary theory, and/or media theory while pursuing an undergraduate degree in order to prepare for a master's degree in cultural studies.

The eligibility for Master of Arts in Cultural Studies in Canada for both domestic and international student is:

Applicants should have an Honours or Four-year BA in English, a joint Honours or Four-Year BA in English and another subject, or an Honours or Four-Year BA in a field that provides the applicant with preparation in cultural, literary, textual, and/or visual studies; (in this context, some degrees we will consider include Honours or Four-Year BAs in Anthropology, Art History, History, Politics, Rhetoric and Communication, Sociology, and Women’s and Gender Studies). Other degrees and/or experience also will be considered on a case-by-case basis. A minimum number of courses in textual studies (the equivalent of 30 credit hours* of study at the Honours level or 48 credit hours of study at other postsecondary levels) is required of all students, to be completed either before entry into the program or during a qualifying period. Other Required Documents:

• Provide one official/notarized transcript of academic work completed to date, sent directly from the issuing institution.
• Supply two confidential letters of recommendation from individuals most familiar with your academic work and relevant experience. Letters should be signed and sealed if they are submitted by the student as part of an application package.
• Attach a statement of interest of 500 words, which includes a brief description of your undergraduate training, your reasons for applying to this program, and your areas of research interest in cultural studies.
• If applicable, attach an academic resumé. Pertinent listings include scholarships, awards, grants, and other distinctions; conference papers, other presentations, and publications; and volunteer and community service.
• Include an academic writing sample, preferably an essay from a recent course with the instructor’s comments, written in English. The committee will also consider supplementary materials.

The University of Winnipeg offers three different types of awards, cultural studies students can apply for these awards to fund their education: 

Course Awards: These awards are specifically for the cultural studies master's program. These funds are usually used to secure research grants, teaching assistantships, and administrative assistant positions for students during the academic year, and sometimes these funds are used for tuition scholarships. 

Scholarships/Internal Scholarships: These competitive awards are funded by the University of Winnipeg and are open to all graduate students. More information can be found on the Intern Award page of the University of Winnipeg Graduate Research website. 

Scholarships/External Scholarships: Every year, outstanding students compete for these publicly funded awards outside the University of Winnipeg. These awards are usually Canada’s leading research funding agencies: Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), Social Sciences and Canadian Council for Humanities Research (SSHRC), and Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Canadian Postgraduate Scholarships. 

University of Winnipeg Graduate Research Scholarship:

• Institution: University of Winnipeg 

• Discipline: All full-time graduate students, national and international, in dissertations, course-based courses, internships, or project-based courses, are eligible to apply, but current students Do not include theology, MMFT, or joint master's degrees. 

• Requesting country/region: Any

• Grant will be in Canada

• Maximum funding: $ 15,000 in 12 months. There is no automatic renewal for the second year. 

• Application Deadline: March 1 

This Scholarship is for full-time graduate students to recognize outstanding academic achievement and contributions to community service. Students must demonstrate outstanding intellectual and academic achievement and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.75 or higher for studies completed in the past two years.
