The criminal justice master's program provides graduate training opportunities in theory, methodology, and research, as well as options for studying in research fields related to future potential employment fields, such as surveillance, discipline, social services, and policy development.
The course can be completed part-time (48 months) or full-time (24 months). Students can study a course and project or a course and an essay-based study plan. Dissertation students complete 6 courses with 18 credits and gain 9 academic credits, a total of 27 credits. Course-based students complete 24-course credits and receive another 3 credits upon completion of their research projects.
Graduates are prepared for additional doctoral studies or intermediate research/planning officer positions in the government or non-profit sector. Due to its flexibility and choice of practical and applied research, the criminal justice master program will attract service professionals and traditional students pursuing advanced studies in the social sciences.
Learning Outcomes for the Master of Arts in Criminal Justice:
Deep understanding of contemporary criminal justice theory;
Mastery of research methods, research design, and application;
About the criminal justice system, its agents, and its advantages and limitations in helping socially disadvantaged groups Knowledge of critical and historical perspectives;
the ability to understand the application of evidence-based practice, and the ability to make policies.
Students who complete courses and dissertation courses will obtain sufficient graduate-level proficiency in theory, methodology, and research to be eligible for additional doctoral studies.
Students who complete the course and project-based options will develop thinking, writing, policymaking, and research skills suitable for positions as intermediate research/planning officials in the government or non-profit sector.
Career examples: Graduates are preparing to obtain additional doctoral studies or intermediate planning/research officer positions in the government or non-profit sector.
Applicants who hold an Honours degree in Criminal Justice or Criminology with an overall grade point average of 3.0 are preferred candidates. Students with a four-year social science degree, strong backgrounds in theory and methods, and a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher will also be considered.
Students without a strong background in criminology or criminal justice may be asked to take additional courses at the third or fourth-year level or complete a qualifying year. Individuals with five or more years of experience at the line level (police officer, probation officer) in the justice field may be given credit for CJ-3800/6 field placement, although this will only be put towards qualifying year courses. There may be other professional experiences that can be considered.
NOTE: Individuals with law degrees who apply must demonstrate some proficiency or potential to succeed in a social science graduate program. This is not an LLM (Master in Law).
