Studying for a Bachelor of Health Sciences (Public Health) at CBU provides a unique opportunity to influence the quality of life for everyone around you. With the knowledge and skills learned here, you will use modern facilities and experienced teachers to play a role in a real community. 

Specifically, CBU's public health plan focuses on environmental health. This part of public health aims to keep people healthy where they live, work, and play. With eclectic communities from over 40 countries working together and learning together in an island setting, Cape Breton's health sciences are a rich field of discovery. 

Our plan uses our region's natural resources with a focus on food safety, air and water quality, infectious disease control, and occupational health and safety. We currently offer three streams of programs. 

Stream One is a four-year option for students who have graduated from high school or have not received higher education. Stream Two is an accelerated two-year option for students who previously held a science degree or similar degree/diploma.

A third category is a career option that can only be used by military personnel seeking a degree. These soldiers must be certified by the Canadian Association of Public Health Inspectors.

All graduates received the same certificate, the Bachelor of Health Sciences (Public Health).

This plan is one of six plans currently approved by the Canadian Association of Public Health Inspectors. Students graduating from our program meet the academic requirements required for internship and certification as an Environmental Health Officer / Public Health Officer in Canada. 

Bachelor of Health Sciences (Public Health) has been studying at CBU since 1996 and has a reputation in Canada for preparing students for the real world. Lab-based courses allow students to participate in activities that promote active learning with experienced teachers in the real world.

The eligibility for Bachelor of Health Sciences (Public Health) in Canada for both domestic and international student is:

An overall average of 65% is required for all students applying to most CBU credit programs based on high school performance. Additional requirements may apply to specific programs.

If space permits, CBU will accept all candidates who can verify that they have met the minimum entry requirements established by CBU for the programs in which they wish to enroll.

Students may apply for early admission, commencing September 15 of the year in which they are registered in Grade 12.

Early admission is available to those students who have an average of at least 75% in the required courses at the Grade 11 level and are currently registered in the Grade 12 courses that satisfy the admission requirements for the academic programs to which they are applying. Early admission does not apply to the Bachelor of Science Nursing program.

Students applying for early fall admission must arrange to have their final Grade 11 marks and proof of registration in their Grade 12 courses (for both semesters where applicable) sent to CBU at the time of application. Admission will be conditional, pending the successful and satisfactory completion of program requirements.

All students who are offered early fall admission must submit an official high school transcript to the Admissions Office by  June 30 of their graduating year or the offer of admission may be withdrawn.

Admission Criteria

All entering students who wish to be considered for entrance scholarships must submit the following in addition to an admission application.

• Official transcript
• Financial need application for those interested in bursaries

High School Students

• No failures in Grade 11 or 12 courses
• Average is based on all AC & AD Grade 11 courses and all AC & AD completed Grade 12 courses after first semester
• Average for international students entering directly from high school will be determined by Cape Breton University
• ESL conditional offers must attend a CBU English language partner school to have award honoured

Articulation Agreement Students

• Articulation agreements (both domestic & international) qualify
• Students must be currently enrolled in their program of transfer
• ESL conditional offers must attend a CBU English language partner school to have award honoured
• Minimum 80% average as determined by CBU to be eligible with no failures

In-Course Scholarships

Cape Breton University offers a number of in-course awards to students after completing one year of study at CBU (minimum 24 credits) while maintaining an overall average of at least 80%. There is no application required for these awards as they are based solely on academic grades and provided to students who are not in receipt of a renewable scholarship.

Bursaries

Cape Breton University provides students with financial need an opportunity to apply for financial aid through its bursary program. There are a number of bursaries that students may be eligible for as well as general bursaries that all students can apply for. In order to be eligible for a bursary, students must:

• Be a registered CBU student
• Complete either an Entrance Bursary Form or In-Course Bursary Form
• Provide income tax assessments for both the student and in some instances parents

Entrance Bursaries

Provided to students entering CBU who prove a strong financial need in order to enter their studies will be considered. The application becomes available in January and closes in March each year. Students must also submit official income tax documentation for themselves and parent(s)/guardian(s) for consideration.

In-Course Bursaries

The in-course bursary application opens in the fall each year and bursaries are awarded during the second semester. Current CBU students must complete the in-course bursary application which is available between mid-November and closes mid-January each year. In-course bursaries are awarded in second semester and are based on financial need.
