The Doctorate in Healthy Population Studies is interdisciplinary in nature and is taught jointly by the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Students in this program are typically supervised by health science and social science faculty and staff.
Students enrolled in the Population Health Study will study the intersection of personal, family, and community life and work and the environment in which they experience health and wellness. Specifically, the specialty focuses on:
Determining the complex factors and structural resources that affect equity in health: The student will be exposed to the theoretical framework related to the population's health, including the social and ecological determinants of health.
Identify and understand the characteristics of communities and health systems and the policy environment to understand the health system's resources and how they can effectively solve the health problems of the population. In addition to focusing on health deficiencies or risk factors, population studies can also determine strategies to maintain or improve health. Examining contextual factors can help decision-makers determine the generality of the strategy to other similar groups of people.
The Health Population Research Program is a thesis-based course. Each student’s academic curriculum combines a prescribed concentration with its research, comprehensive examinations, and synchronized coursework around the concentration’s outstanding topics and the specific research questions pursued. Depending on the academic background, students may need to complete up to six courses.
Course requirements are provided through a combination of independent study, which will directly address the main topics described and existing formal graduate courses in health and social sciences. The core learning outcomes of the program prepare graduates to conduct population-based health research or interventions in various fields, including higher education, non-profit and for-profit organizations, and government and private institutions:
