Detailed Information of CULTURAL, SOCIAL, AND POLITICAL THOUGHT (PHD) in Canada at University of Lethbridge

Program Overview for CULTURAL, SOCIAL, AND POLITICAL THOUGHT (PHD) in Canada:

Ph.D. in cultural, social, and political thought. The program is interdisciplinary and based on a cohort learning model that encourages interdisciplinary participation and communication, inquiry, peer counseling, and group student collaboration in a team-based learning experience environment.

The overall academic goal of the program is to emphasize social, cultural, and political ideas and instill the knowledge and practical tools necessary to successfully cooperate with community partners and institutions to promote social change. Students graduating from specializations in cultural, social, and political thinking are well-trained experts who demonstrate a mosaic of professional skills (such as teaching, peer review, public speaking, critical thinking, etc.) and research capabilities.

Graduates can conduct novel, relevant, and rigorous research and make meaningful and substantial contributions to interdisciplinary knowledge. The program is highly theoretical and interdisciplinary and aims to become entrenched in several critical theories and related methodologies.

Crossing disciplinary boundaries, the specialty of cultural, social, and political thought emphasizes the critical participation of thought and its performance in the constantly changing cultural, social, and political context.  The main learning outcomes of the program are:

  • Comprehensive professional knowledge and advanced understanding of theoretical frameworks related to cultural, social, and political ideas (such as feminism, poststructuralism, postmodernism, postcolonialism, and critical theory).

  • Complete professional knowledge and advanced substantive knowledge in the interdisciplinary field of cultural, social, and political thought. Research topics are not limited but may include issues, problems, and concepts such as gender, race, class, disability, sex, equality, citizenship, justice, power, and resistance.

  • Comprehensive professional knowledge and advanced understanding of relevant methodology and methods related to cultural, social, and political thought, such as historical materialism, and mastery of applicable methods such as discourse analysis, ethnography, and interviews.

  • Propose, design, exhibit, and disseminate comprehensive professional knowledge and advanced capabilities of original and related research in the interdisciplinary field of cultural, social, and political thought.

The doctoral program is administered centrally by the graduate school, not by individual departments or universities.
