Program Overview for Bachelor of Science in Biology in Canada:

Get a good foundation in modern biology and gain the job skills of a professional biologist with a biology degree from UFV. In your first and second years, you have a basic understanding of cell biology, biochemistry, and ecological / organism interactions. In the third and fourth years, you will expand your knowledge through a wide range of advanced courses. 

You may also choose to take advantage of extracurricular learning opportunities through field trips, field trips, and targeted learning. The UFV School of Biology will support every step of your academic journey, including your own research career. Personalize your position according to your interests by choosing one of the following majors: 

  • Pre-medicine/veterinary medicine 
  • Cells, molecules, and genetics
  • Biological ecology and biology  

This program:

  • provides you with a wealth of laboratories Experience for interactive and hands-on laboratory and research skills. 
  • You are encouraged to conduct your own biological research under the guidance of individual teachers or as part of regular course materials.
  • Promote cooperative internships and summer work experiences with local companies and organizations.
  • Prepares you for entry into graduate or professional schools, which specialize in different fields such as genetics, ecology, or pre-medicine.

Career Expectations:

The BC Conference Committee reported that occupations requiring natural sciences knowledge provide low unemployment and rising wages. Biology graduates are capable of competing for entry-level positions in various employment fields, including land management, environmental protection, fish and wildlife services, food and drug departments, geographic research, health or agricultural institutions.

A degree in biology is an important starting point for graduate study in various fields of biology, including biotechnology, environmental toxicology, neuroscience, ecology, and microbiology.

High School Applicants, please provide a copy of:

  • Your high school transcript(s) and proof of graduation if you have graduated from high school, or a copy of your interim high school transcript(s) if you are currently in high school.
  • If you are currently studying in a high school outside of Canada, you will be required to provide your final high school transcript and proof of graduation in August, or at the latest, before fall classes begin.
  • If you are currently studying in a BC high school or BC high school offshore, please provide your Personal Education Number (PEN) in your application. UFV can download your interim and final transcripts if you have provided permission to release your grades to UFV for one year at the Ministry of Education website.  The deadline to receive your final high transcript and proof of graduation is August 3.

Post-Secondary Applicants, please provide a copy of:

  • Your high school transcript(s).
  • Your post-secondary transcript(s) from all institutions attended. Please note that evaluation of previous post-secondary credit is a requirement for admission to some programs. If your official post-secondary transcript(s) is required, a document evaluation fee will be charged to your student account.

Students can declare a major in Biology after completing at least 30 university-level credits with a minimum of 2.0 CGPA on all attempted credits after meeting the declaration requirements for Biology.

Entrance requirements

  1. B.C. secondary school graduation or equivalent, or completion of nine university-level credits with a minimum GPA of 2.00 in all university courses attempted.
  2. Mathematics requirement: one of the following:
    • Pre-calculus 12 or Principles of Mathematics 12 with a minimum grade of B
    • Calculus 12 with a minimum grade of A
    • MATH 092 and MATH 093, each with a minimum grade of B
    • MATH 095 with a minimum grade of B
    • MATH 096 with a minimum grade of B
    • MDPT score of 70% or better
    • MATH 110 with a minimum grade of C+
    • MATH 111 with a minimum grade of C
  3. Science requirement: one course from one of the following disciplines, with a minimum grade of C+:
    • Biology: Anatomy and Physiology 12, Biology 12, BIO 093, or BIO 111
    • Chemistry: Chemistry 12, CHEM 093 (discontinued), CHEM 110, or CHEM 113
    • Geography: Physical Geography 12, Geography 12, GEOG 101 (discontinued), GEOG 102 (discontinued), or GEOG 103
    • Geology: Geology 12 or GEOG 116
    • Physics: Physics 12, PHYS 093, PHYS 100, PHYS 101, PHYS 105, or PHYS 111
  4. English requirement: Applicants must meet the Degree/diploma level English language proficiency requirement. See the English language proficiency requirement section of the calendar for details on how this requirement may be met.

Attendance at a Bachelor of Science information session or personal interview with an Advisor is recommended.

Students who do not meet these requirements might consider Qualifying Studies.

The basis for the admission decision:

  1. Applicants must meet the minimum standard for entry.
  2. Applicants who qualify will be offered seats in order (from highest to lowest) of one of the following:
    • For secondary school entrance, an admission GPA based on the best Grade 12 science and either Pre-calculus 12 or Principles of Mathematics 12 (or equivalent).
    • For university entrance, a cumulative GPA based on all university credits attempted.
  3. Application date and time will be used to break ties when students have the same GPA.
