Detailed Information of MA in Theatre Studies in Canada at University of Victoria

Program Overview for MA in Theatre Studies in Canada:

Performance is the key to everything we do. Our graduate programs teach in a comprehensive and immersive style. You’ll receive hands-on experience and training from leading scholars and theatre professionals. Our courses will keep you engaged with on-your-feet theatre learning.

Your graduate studies will be in a dynamic research environment. You’ll work with a diverse group of students in small classes. You’ll receive real mentorship and support from our renowned faculty. You'll use our facilities and technical excellence and make the shows of your dreams come to life.

Study the history and composition of the theater. You will research and write academic articles suitable for publication. You should have a basic understanding of the history of Western drama (from ancient Greece to the present) and have a strong background in dramatic literature. You should also be familiar with the specific details of stage production: design, director, and performance.

The eligibility for MA in Theatre Studies in Canada for both domestic and international student is:

Completion of a 4-year bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from an institution recognized by Uvic. The equivalent of a minimum “B” average over the last two years of your degree.

Applicants must possess a general knowledge of Western theatre history, from the Greeks to the present, or a strong background in dramatic literature. Applicants must also be familiar with the practicalities of theatre production: design, direction, and performance.

Normally all admissions are conditional upon a diagnostic examination in theatre history.

The Department of Theatre requires applicants for admission to any of the graduate programs to send a letter to Graduate Admissions with a statement of purpose and a detailed resumé of their educational background, theatre experience, and teaching experience, if applicable. Applicants must have completed appropriate undergraduate theatre courses.

References should come from theatre professors and/or recognized theatre professionals. In addition to satisfying the general requirements for admission to the Faculty of Graduate Studies (please see the UVic Graduate Calendar), applicants must be approved by the Department of Theatre; a minimum GPA of B+ (6.0) is required for admission.

All applicants are judged on a competitive basis and admission is limited. Not all students who meet the minimum requirements will be admitted.

Normally we accept applications only for September enrolment.

Deadlines

All applications must be submitted on forms available from the Graduate Admission and Records Office website by February 1. Applicants are automatically considered for a Graduate Fellowship or Award upon application.
