Program Overview for Master of Social Work in Canada:

Learn advanced technology in qualitative and quantitative methods. He pursued the classes and surveys of candidates to complement his independent investigation. Your experience in sociology will help you study and create articles. This original work is added greatly to the field of sociology. 

Master of Social Work Foundation:

The MSW Foundation (MSWF) program is for students who do not have a BSW degree. You must have a 4-year bachelor's degree and at least two years of full-time human services experience. We accept students in odd-numbered years every nine months. Core courses are taught on campus in a full-time cohort model.

Master of Social Work Advanced:

The MSW Advanced (MSWA) program is based on a commitment to social justice and social work. This program aims to expand your understanding of the social, cultural, political, and practical impact of social work practices. 

The program started with an introductory institution on campus, and the rest of the program was completed through distance education. You can choose to write a thesis or complete an advanced internship (450 hours) and Capstone course. The MSWA program is offered annually to applicants who hold a BSW degree from an accredited Canadian (CASWE) or International (IASSW) School of Social Work.

Master of Social Work Indeginious Specialization:

MSW Indigenous Specialization (MSWI) is designed for professionals who work for and collaborate with indigenous organizations. We recognize that these professionals work in a historical, cultural, and administrative environment completely different from those working in non-indigenous environments. 

Our MSWI program will require you to develop your knowledge and skills in this context. You can choose to write a thesis or complete an advanced internship (450 hours) and Capstone course. MSWI is planned to be provided every two years in even-numbered years. It is suitable for applicants with a BSW degree from an accredited Canadian (CASWE) or International (IASSW) School of Social Work.

The eligibility for Master of Social Work in Canada for both domestic and international student is:

Master of Social Work Foundation:

All candidates for the MSW program must meet all general requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and the specific requirements of the School of Social Work. Entry into the MSW Advanced Program and MSW Indigenous Specialization requires a BSW degree from an accredited School of Social Work. Entry into the MSW Foundation program requires an undergraduate degree from a recognized degree-granting institution.

All programs require a minimum GPA of 6.0 (B+) or higher. Human service experience is required for all program entries. Detailed application information is available on the School of Social Work website. All application materials must be submitted to the Graduate Admissions and Records Office through the online application. Entry to the program is competitive, and enrolment may be restricted in any given year.

Master of Social Work Advanced/Indigenous Specialization:

Deadline

Program offering information is posted to the School of Social Work website in the fall of each year. The application deadline is December 1 for both domestic and international applicants.   • IELTS(academic): 6.5
N.B: ELP is not mandatory for all international students. You could apply without ELP if your previous degree's medium of instruction were in English. Students of Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia, for example, are not required to take the ELP test.

  • Up to $17,500 per year (masters)
  • Up to $20,000 per year (Ph.D.)

UVic Graduate Awards

  • Up to $10,000 per year (masters and PhD)

Eligibility

  • The minimum requirement for funding consideration is an A- average on the last two years of coursework
  • Domestic and international students are considered equally for funding
  • Full-time registration (3.0 units) for UVic Fellowship holders and at least part-time registration (1.5 units) for UVic Graduate Award holders
  • Full-time registration for students registered with the Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL) is 1.5 units

Every year we employ many graduate students to assist with teaching, research, and lab instruction.

  • Their academic units hire teaching assistants (TAs) to assist with teaching and grading courses. These are unionized, hourly positions.
  • Faculty members hire research assistants (RAs) to help with their research. These roles are sometimes called scientific assistants or laboratory instructors. RA salaries come from faculty members’ research grants. Because of this, RA hours, salary, and other details are worked out between you and the faculty member.

Work-study

The work-study program offers part-time jobs on campus that fit your course schedule.

To be eligible, you must:

  • Be a full-time student
  • Demonstrate financial need
