A doctorate in clinical psychology will prepare you for a career in clinical practice or academic and/or research. You will receive basic training in the following areas of psychology:
Social, developmental, biological, and cognitive foundations of human behavior
Psychological assessment
Diagnosis, intervention, and prevention
Psychopathology
Ethical and professional issues
Cultural diversity
Research and Evaluation Method
Monitoring and Consultation
You will complete the Candidate Qualification Examination and prepare a thesis based on your research. After the thesis defense, you will complete a one-year clinical internship.

Masters and Ph.D. applicants in psychology do not need a supervisor to apply for admission. However, you must include at least 2 potential supervisors in your application. The supervisor makes the final decision on the admission of eligible applicants. Check out our list of supervisors who will accept students entering next September.
An undergraduate degree in psychology or equivalent with at least a B+ (6.0 GPA) average in the last two years leading to the degree is recommended. Applicants should have taken at least one course in applied statistics. In cases of an undergraduate degree in areas other than psychology, additional foundational coursework may be assigned at the discretion of the student’s supervisory committee as a requirement for the graduate degree.
Students whose first language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency following the Faculty of Graduate Studies calendar regulations. It should be noted that the departmental requirement is higher than that required by the Faculty of Graduate Studies. For the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), applicants must receive an overall score of at least 600 on the paper-based test, or 100 on the Internet-Based TOEFL (IBT) with minimum section requirements of 20 on Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.
Applicants taking the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) must achieve an overall score of at least Band 7, with no score of less than 6.0 on each academic component. Applicants taking the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) must achieve an overall score of at least 90.
Under typical circumstances, applicants must provide scores from the General Test (verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing sections) of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) unless an exemption is sought and approved by the department Graduate Executive committee. No specific cut-off scores are used to determine acceptability.

Applicants intending to pursue clinical training specializing in neuropsychology or lifespan development must declare their intent at the time of application under Field of Study. The admissions committee will then review such applicants for the clinical program based on:
The academic progress and clinical aptitude of students admitted to clinical training will be reviewed annually.
Students providing psychological services to children and other vulnerable individuals at the Psychology Clinic and at practicum settings in the community will be required to complete a Criminal Record Check.
Applications are due at the Graduate Admissions and Records Office by December 1st. Students should keep in mind that substantial lead time is required to register for and take the GRE (and, if required, the TOEFL, IELTS, or MELAB) in time for results to be received within the deadline. All documents, including GRE scores, MUST be received by the deadline for students applying to the clinical psychology program.
