Program Overview for MSc in Psychology in Canada:

Our Psychology Postgraduate Program has a strong research approach. You will be scientific that use the research and evaluation of evidence and treatment. You can study one of the five specialized fields: 

  • Cognitive and cerebral science (including accelerated options)

  • Life of life and development

  • Social psychology

  • Clinical psychology (development of life and development specialized in neuropsychology)

  • Individual programs

Skills To communicate with these degrees research results to benefit. As you work in a cooperative research environment, you will learn practical tasks. It will complete your education through practical experience in specialized psychology. 

The master's program is designed to provide you with a wide range of professional research training. When writing a thesis, you will improve your professional writing and analysis skills. Participate in teacher supervision research in one of the following areas: 

  • Cognitive and brain sciences (e.g., embodied cognition, memory, visual perception)

  • Social psychology (e.g., interpersonal relationships, motivation, personality)

  • Health and development of the whole life (E.g., early development, aging, self-regulation)

  • Personalized choice (e.g., environmental psychology)

Find a supervisor:

Masters and Ph.D. applicants in psychology do not need a supervisor to apply for admission. However, you must include at least 2 potential supervisors in your application. The supervisor makes the final decision on the admission of eligible applicants. Check out our list of supervisors who will accept students entering next September.

The eligibility for MSc in Psychology in Canada for both domestic and international student is:

An undergraduate degree in psychology or equivalent with at least a B+ (6.0 GPA) average in the last two years leading to the degree is recommended. Applicants should have taken at least one course in applied statistics. In cases of an undergraduate degree in areas other than psychology, additional foundational coursework may be assigned at the discretion of the student’s supervisory committee as a requirement for the graduate degree.

Students whose first language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency following the Faculty of Graduate Studies calendar regulations. It should be noted that the departmental requirement is higher than that required by the Faculty of Graduate Studies. For the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), applicants must receive an overall score of at least 600 on the paper-based test, or 100 on the Internet-Based TOEFL (IBT) with minimum section requirements of 20 on Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.

Applicants taking the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) must achieve an overall score of at least Band 7, with no score of less than 6.0 on each academic component. Applicants taking the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) must achieve an overall score of at least 90.

Personal letter

Applicant must also provide a personal letter that:

  1. identifies the primary area of specialization desired
  2. describes areas of research interest
  3. names at least two faculty members with whom the applicant wishes to work
  4. gives details of the current activity (e.g., courses in progress)
  5. indicates whether financial support will be required

Admission requires that a faculty supervisor is available.

Deadline

Applications are due at the Graduate Admissions and Records Office by December 1st. Students should keep in mind that substantial lead time is required to register for and take, if required, the TOEFL, IELTS, or MELAB in time for results to be received within the deadline.

The Department of Psychology makes every effort to communicate offers of admission by April 1st.

  • Up to $17,500 per year (masters)
  • Up to $20,000 per year (Ph.D.)

  • Up to $10,000 per year (masters and PhD)

Eligibility

  • The minimum requirement for funding consideration is an A- average on the last two years of coursework
  • Domestic and international students are considered equally for funding
  • Full-time registration (3.0 units) for UVic Fellowship holders and at least part-time registration (1.5 units) for UVic Graduate Award holders
  • Full-time registration for students registered with the Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL) is 1.5 units

Every year we employ many graduate students to assist with teaching, research, and lab instruction.

  • Their academic units hire teaching assistants (TAs) to assist with teaching and grading courses. These are unionized, hourly positions.
  • Faculty members hire research assistants (RAs) to help with their research. These roles are sometimes called scientific assistants or laboratory instructors. RA salaries come from faculty members’ research grants. Because of this, RA hours, salary, and other details are worked out between you and the faculty member.

Work-study

The work-study program offers part-time jobs on campus that fit your course schedule.
