In physics and astronomy, you will study the components of our universe. Through dynamic learning, you will gain basic knowledge about yourself and your research.
All master of science and doctorate degrees are awarded in physics. Astronomy, Medical Physics, and Marine Physics also offer specific degree courses with different course requirements.
In the master's program, you will study a thesis that will help us understand the universe. You can get one of the following four majors:
No matter which major you choose, you All will receive support from our faculty and staff and use our laboratories and facilities. Our research fields range from the small-scale structure of matter to the universe's large-scale cosmology and astronomical structure. Students holding an existing bachelor's degree usually enter a master's program.
Areas of focus:
The normal prerequisite for all programs is a (UVic equivalent) Honours degree in Physics, Astronomy, or related subjects. Students admitted to the MSc program but with backgrounds judged to be less than a UVic Honours degree (e.g., a Major degree) are normally required to take additional undergraduate courses in Physics, Astronomy, and Mathematics to satisfy the stated prerequisite.
International applicants
Applicants for MSc programs who completed their undergraduate degree at a non-Canadian university are normally expected to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), General and Subject exams, and submit the results to the Graduate Admissions and Records Office. Applicants for MSc programs whose native language is not English must also satisfy the English Competency Requirement for the Faculty of Graduate Studies (see Faculty Admissions for details). Students with this qualification may still be required to complete English language courses along with their program-related coursework.
The English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirements for Msc in Physics & Astronomy in Canada: are:

All graduate students must have a faculty member who serves as their academic supervisor. When you apply:
To find a supervisor, review the faculty contacts. When you've found a faculty member whose research complements your own, contact them by email.
Contact the graduate secretary at physgrad@uvic.ca or 250-721-7700.
Graduate students registered in full-time programs are automatically considered for a fellowship. This is based on a qualifying GPA.
Individual award amounts may vary depending on the program.
