Language can change the world. You will study everything from language acquisition and language theory to community language needs in our linguistics graduate program. You will acquire valuable skills and competitive skill set to adapt to various workplaces. We train graduate students in three specialized areas: language theory, applied linguistics, and the revival of indigenous languages. We offer doctoral programs that focus on your specific research interests in any professional field.
In our Master of Applied Linguistics program, you will study language theory and research methods. You will focus on learning the diversity of the second language. This includes second language teaching practices and methods. You will continue your investigation under the supervision of a supervisor who has expertise in your subject. We provide thesis and non-thesis project options.

The minimum general and academic requirements for admission to the Faculty of Graduate Studies include:
Applicants whose native language is not English must consult the Faculty of Graduate Studies regulations concerning the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) under English Language Proficiency. The department requires minimum scores as follows for applicants for whom the test is required. For the MA in Applied Linguistics, the department requires 600 on the paper-based test or 100 on the internet-based test. Otherwise, the department requires 580 on the paper-based test or 92 on the internet-based test. For all programs, the minimum acceptable IELTS score is 7.0.
The admissions selection process is competitive. Not all students who meet the minimum requirements will be admitted. Typically, the Department of Linguistics admits between six and eight graduate students each year.
Admission to the program requires a bachelor’s degree, preferably in Linguistics or Applied Linguistics, or a bachelor’s degree with a Diploma in Applied Linguistics, or equivalent, with a minimum overall average of B+ (6.00 GPA) in the final year’s work.
